Special Council of Administration - Michigan Conferenoe
January 6, 1965
This presentation and request for adoption of recommendation comes
after weeks of suspension and worlds of rumor regarding the opening
for new Executive Director to t m Michigan Counc:J,:! of Churches.
·
On May 26, 1964 Bishop Marshall Reed, Chairman af the Personnel Committee
under assignment to secure a new Executive Director, confronted me at the
Board af Directors meeting in Ypsilanti, Michigan,· asking li' I would be
will to hold interview with his committee on this matter of office.
I told him I was not mu~h interested, and would nat make any kind of
application or seek sooh an office. I did admit it had been an ~njoyable
experience to serve as President of the Michigan Council of Chtn'Cheso

Nothing happened (except rumors everywhere), until Dr Lies emer told me
I was to be interviewed by the Personnel· Committee in Detroit on December
17, 1964"
Two days· later I received the formal request in writing f'rom
Dr Robert Yelton, secretar.y of Personnel Committee.
The interview was
held on that date.
Dr Grover Hartman, Executive Director for the
Indiana Council of Churches (J;.ridianapolis, Indiana) was interviewed the
same morning •
Nothing happened officially until Dec~mber 29 1 1964 when I received another
letter f:::'om Robert Yelton saying that the Personnel Committee had unanimous~ .
voted to request my accepta~ce.
On Wednesdqy afternoon of December 30~ 199.
I wrote a letter of acceptance.
This was done after conferring with
Bishop Mueller (before his departure for Eurmpe) and with Bishop H. R.
Heininger who is now tEJ}dng responsibilitiPa f 1:':" West Central Area.
The acceptance of invitation fr om the M:tclli3.:m Council of Churches
and
the conversations with both Bishops provid<' ~:he basis f or trn following
recommendation:
