Let love be genuine and live in harmony;
hate what is evil, hold f as t to what is good.
Ou tdo one another in showing honor;
be humble and never conceited.
Love is stronger than death
and jealousy is cruel as the grave.
Floods cannot drown love

MARY WILLOUGHBY ALBERY

I

? 9~

It was exciting and somewhat awesome to feel literally compelled at
mid-life to commit myself to preparation for the ordained ministry
in The United Methodist Church . This was not a quick, impulsive
decision, as my sense of call was a culmination of a series of insights,
decisions and commitments at pivotal times in my life . ..
• Birth, June 25, 1924, as a parsonage child in the Western
North Carolina Conference with a summer home at the Lake
Junaluska Methodist Assembly.
• Leadership opportunities in the Methodist Student Movement at Duke University.
• Participating in an Interfaith, International, Interracial work camp known as the Lisle
Fellowship (near Syracuse, New York) all summer upon graduation from Duke 1945.
• Serving as a Director of Christian Education in Waterbury, Connecticut First Methodist
while my husband, Robert Willoughby, attended Yale Divinity School (1945-48).
• Sharing ministry as a pastor's wife in the West Michigan and Detroit Conferences 23
years; to us were born three daughters, Barbara Joy, Margaret Jeanne, Mary Ann , one son, Robert
Willoughby II, and one granddaughter Katie to Barbi and Peter.
• Staff Program Director of Western Wayne County Y.W.C.A., focusing on neighborhood
development in low income, multi-ethnic neighborhoods with over a decade of service in the south
end of Dearborn , which has the highest concentration of Arabic population in the United States
(1968-1979).
• Executive Secretary of Michigan Church Women United with state office in my Detroit
home a number of years just before embarking upon my seminary education at Wesley Theological
Seminary in Washington, D .C., January 1979.
Throughout my seminary years, 1979-1983, I was privileged to serve the Girdle Tree/
Stockton student charge of four churches driving 150 miles each way betweP.n the Eastern shore
of Maryland and Washington, D .C., crossing the Chesapeake Bay twice weekly. Deacon
ordination, 1980; Elder ordination , 1985.
Appointm~nts in the Detroit Conference include:
• Epworth, River Rouge -Woodmere, Detroit, 1983
• Detroit Conference Associate Council Director for the Marquette District half time, and pastor
of the Munising Church half time, 1986
• Berkley First United Methodist Church, 1989
October 21, 1990, I was married to Dr. Paul Albery, retired pastor of the West Michigan
Conference and longtime close family friend since 1950. Our wedding in the Berkley church was
blessed with family and friends coming from every church either of us has served these past forty
years.
A paraphrase of Paul the Apostle's prayer in Philippians 1 expresses the gratitude I feel
for so many countless persons who have shaped my life and ministry: my beloved late parents,
husband, children, grandchildren, teachers, seminary professors, colleagues in ministry and
friends who have left indelible marks on my life and ministry.

I thank my God in every remembrance, constantly praying with joy for you because of your
sharing with me in the Gospel of God's unfailing Grace. I hold you in my heart. It is my prayer
that our love may overflow more and more as we continue to praise God through the Glory
of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

"Munising will be well served by her

ing an ordained minister. Born in
Greensboro, North Carolina, she has four
grown children, one of whom lives in the
Detroit area. Most recently she has served a two point urban charge, one in Detroit
and the other in River Rouge. Prior to that
she served a four point rural circuit in the
Peninsula Conference in Maryland both
during and following her graduation from
Wesley Seminary.
Earlier in her life Mary worked for the
YWCA. Among other things, she organized the women of southwest Detroit around
activities for mutual upbuilding. During
one stint she was the executive for Church
Women United, a post that called upon a
range of skills. She worked with people of
a variety of denominations seeking to help
them bear witness to Christ in the everyday world .
.
Mary is a lifelong United Methodist who
brings zest, experience, and deep commitment to Christ into her new ministry.
When asked about the appointment
Bishop Craig replied, " We had to replace
Joel Hurley, who had done excellent work
at the local church and on the staff, with
a fi rst class appointment. 1 am pleased
that we are able to appoint Mary
Willoughby. The people will respond to her
spirit and the district will gain much from
the skills she Will bring."
