Deforest Arrand

I was born in the village of Clare, Clare County,
Michigan, on JUne 24, 1901, the third child of Charles
W. and J anet E.

( ne J a net E Tye). An older

brother and sister did not live to maturity. I have
one brother, Cecil

w.

Arrand, of Flint, Michigan and

one s ister, Mrs. Ray BakP-r, of Brimley, Michigan, and
one foster brother, Dr . M.

c.

Arrand, Utica, Mich i gan.

At the time of my brith my father was the owner
and opera tor of a dray business in Clare, Michigan.
Upon l eaving the business he went unto a farm where he
remained for several years.

In 1916 he entered the

ministry of the Free Methodist Church as a loca l
preacher, full time supply.

1935 .

From this he retired in

Both parents are now deceased.
As my father was in the ministry, we children

attended several different schools in different
villages where he served.

I am a 1921 gr ad ua ted of

the hi gh school department,
Arbor Seminary.

In the f a ll of 1921 I matriculated

at Greenville College, Greenville, Ill.

After one

year of college I taught in a rural school for two
years.

I returned to Greenville College in 1924 and

was gradua ted with a A. B.

s.

degree in

biology a nd

physi cak science, in June 1927.
From colle ge I went into public school t eaching .

2

The University of Michigan granted me a MA degree in
Public School Supervision and Administration in the
spring of 1939·
In June 1928 I married Helem Watkins of Fargo,
North Dakota - we had been classmate in Greenville.
We are the parents of three children, Barbara, Mrs.
Dona ld Devey, whose husband is a

baptist minister in

Frances, Mrs. Walter Dei gel,

of Dayton, Ohio and Charles of Fairfax Calif. Each
daughter has f our children and Charles has a daughter.
While the children were groNing we kept them
involved in the activities of the Meth odist Church,
schools and camp. My wife and I were involved in
similiar activities in the church t o insure a good interest in the church qctivities on the part of the
children nad as a means of serving God with and by our
Ot'ln lives.
During the summer of 1956 the Flint district
superintendent of the Methodist Church and the pastor
of the Court Street Methodist Church urged me to
supply the Duffield r1ethodist Church for a few Sundays
or only until they could ge t some person to take over
the charge.

To oe of help I agreed to t ake over for

the four or five

Sund~ys.

The "four or five" stretch

ed out to seven years a nd one Sunday as a part time
supply pa stor of the Duffield Methodist Church.

3
This was while I was still doing my re gular work as
school administrator.
During the spring semester of the school year of

1963 I chose to t ake my r eti r ement from education.
For many years during my career in public educa tion,
I was involved in Church School activities, teaching
classes a nd serving in other capacities.
Upon making the decision to retire from publi c
education I decided that I had served the Duff ield
church well enough and would retire from it.

My

wife and I t hought tha t with my interest in the churc
which I had been involved in in serving Duffield,
that I should offer to be of further use to the
church.
With this deci sion in mind we ha d a conference
wi th Dr. J ewel Smoot, our pastor.

His agreement with

us wa s instant, and he ma de some recommendations
which we immedia tely bega n to consider.

The conclu-

sion of the matter was that early in June 1963 the
Rev.

Paul Hart, pastor of Oa k Park Methodist Church,

in Flint invited me to become his associate.

I

agreed a nd the bishop made the appointment at the
June conference.
I served the Rev. Paul Hart for four years a nd
ha d a fine relati onship with him and with the congrega tion. I chose to retire from that position in

4
June 1967.
During my four years as associate pastor of
Oak Park Church, I completed the Confer nee Course of
study for Deacon's orders in 1965 and Elder's orders
in 1967.

li have retired twice, public education and

the Methodist Ministry.
My main reason for retiring from the Associ ate
relation at Oak Park in 1967 was to devote my time
and energy in getting the conference For Mar project
going.

I agreed to do the footwork for the local

pa stors who were sufficiently involved in their own
work as pastors so they had little time to devote to
the much needed retirement project, For Mar.

Even

though I had put much time and energy into it and
had developed plans whe r e-by the For Mar project
d

could ge t uner way on a much sma ller sca le then
orginally plannP-d, the conference boa rd chose to drop
the entire project.

My

efforts were not v e ry effect -

ive for my first year of retirement.
Some of the time in 1967 a nd much of the time in

1968

my wife a nd I ha ve been working along with the

Mtt Foundation Project, a s leade rs in an effort to
create better understanding and better association
between the Negro and White in Flint.

We have spent
