The Rev. Frederick Atkinson,
6720 E. Bourne, Gregory, 67, died
Thursday, F eb. 4 following an
automoblie accident at J ackson.
The Rev. Atkinson was the pastor
of the North Lake United 1\<Icthodist church and the Salem Grove
United Methodist church.
Born June 12, 1·903 in Altoona ,
Pa., he wa.s the son of William
and Lisetta Atkinson. He married
Bobbie Fitchette June (i, 1952 in
Detroit. She survives.
H e was a camera man-lithog-rapher ·by tl•ade, and worked in
various positions with the Federal
Government for many yea rs. H e
entered the ministry 1when he wa.s
6.1, and served in four churches in
southern •I llinois prior to his coming to Chelsea in the fall of 1969.
The Rev. Atkinson is survived
by his n.vidmv, 'Bobbie, two daughters, Mrs. K een (Agnes) Hepburn
of Haymarket, Va., and Mrs.
' William (Patricia) Nelson of
Washington, D.C., three stepdaughters, Mrs. Ray (BQb!:lie L ou) .
Westbrooks of Trenton, Mrs. T ommy (Judy) Nance and Mrs. Richard (Jean) Deskovitz, both of
Westland; three sons, Frederick
Atkinson, Jr., of McLean, Va.,
Roderick of Arling t on, Va., and
Danny at home; nine grandchildren, seven ,step-g randchildren;
.four gr eat-grandchildren.
Memot·ial services will ,be held
at the North Lake United •Methodist church on Feb. 14, at 4 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be
made to a favorite church or charity or to the North Lake United
Methodist church or the Salem

Atkinson was heading north at
the time, Sheriff's deputies said
when his Volkswagen skidded o~
the rain slic.ked highway and rammed into a •bridge railing.
The car ·bounced off the railing
and veered into the path of a
semi-tractor t ruck, also northbound on US-127. The truck was'
driven by David L. Carpenter, 27,
of Allen.
Ca,rpenter tried to avoid the
coJlision, but failed, and ran int o
the median, tipping the truck
over on its side. He 1\Vas taken
by ambulance to Foote Hospital,
where he was listed in good condition with cuts and bruises. His
truck blocked the !passing lanes
of -b oth north a n,d south-bound
sections of the hi ghway for n early four hours, of-:ficia.ls claimed.

' Grove Methodist church. A camera-man lithographer by trade, he
entered the minis try six years
ago, and served in fou r churches
f in southern Illinoh; before coming
~ to Chelsea in the fall of 1969.
REV. FREDERICK ATKINSON of Grass
Lake, pastor of the Salem Grove and
North Lake churches, was killed in an
automobile accident Thursday night, February 4. Memorial services were held at
the North Lake church on Sunday, February 14, at 4 p.m.
