SAM E. YEARBY, JR.

Wife, Joan. Two children, Mark Yearby and Kathy Gausden.
One of nine children born to an Alabama farmer in 1929 on the
wings of the Great Depression. Educated in rural and small-town
school systems. B.S. Deoree from Trov University; Master of
Theology from Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Georgia.
Vocational choices: Printer, Journalist, Teacher, Commercial Artist, career in USMC. Call
to Ministry made my career decision, and launched me upon a 40 year journey as a Methodist
Pastor. Served 20 churches in Alabama West-Florida and Detroit Annual Conferences. My first
appointment had eight churches (Pike County, Alabama). Organized two churches in Mobile,
Alabama.
I have a sense of peace and fulfillment as I come to the end of my career. This peace comes
not from large churches served or impressive accomplishments, but from the feeli11g that an-mall, I've done my best. Moments of joy and peace far out-weigh struggles and failures which are
a part of the career package of being a pastor. My rewards come from having shared the Good
News and seeing its results in the live~ of people . I f~~l ~ood obout efforts to minister to the needs
of thousands in lhe urban setting. Seems worth it all to have shared the poin ond prassur<2s of life
with those who hurt; and to speak God's word of comfort to the bereaved. I am honored to believe
that hundreds have found life just a bit better because I was there with the ministry of WORD,
SACRAMENT and OFFICE of service. Little children have been one of God 's blessed rewards to
me.
It has been my high privilege to have served six special churches in the Detroit Annual
Conference: Epworth-River Rouge; Highland Park Trinity; Hazel Park First; Davison; Lincoln
Park First and Roseville, Trinity. I've served with some of the finest District Superintendentc:: tho
church l1a~ to offer.

Joan and I have bought a small home on Rock Street in Roseville. This home is only a 10minute drive to Joan's work at the Warren GM Tech Center where she will work 6 more years.
I hope to take a part-time retirement appointment in one of the small urban churches which might
need me.
