spouse: Sung. "In 1972 I came
to this country without anything and started a pioneer
church, the Korean M ethodist
church of M etropolitan Detroit with a few members meeting in a private house. Now we
have about 1000 members
(including children) with a
new church building on ten
acres of land. As a retired pastor, I will continue to work ·as
the Mission Director for the
Southeastern
Jurisdiction,
Korean - American Mission of
the UMC to spread the Gospel
of Jesus Christ. We will be living in Atlanta, Georgia."

YOUNG BONG YOON

I was born in North Korea in December 1928, when my
mother was 40 years old, as the strong Providence of God moved to
realize his plan for this world.
My mother accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior when I was 11 years old. From that time
on, my mother prayed at 4 A.M. every morning at the church that one of her four sons would
become a minister of the church. God answered that prayer, called me, and put me into the
Methodist Seminary in Korea from which I graduated in June 1949.
I started my ministerial life early in 1950 in Shin Yang-Ri Methodist Church in North
Korea as the Evangelist (Local Pastor). I was really persecuted by the Communists before and
during the Korean War.
I escaped from North Korea to South Korea in January 1951 with United Nations troops.
I had served three years in a local Church and was ordained by Bishop Hyung K. Lew in March
1953. I then served in the Korean Army as a chaplain and preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ
to young soldiers. Later, I served on the Board of Evangelism of the Korean Methodist Church
as Director of Church Development. Then, I served the East Korea Annual Conference as the
Council On Ministries Director. Altogether, I had 22 years of ministerial service in Korea.
In 1972, I came to this country without anything, and started a pioneer church, the
Korean Methodist Church of Metropolitan Detroit with a few members meeting in a private
house. Now we have about 1,000 members (including children) with new church buildings on
10 acres of land.
For the next 23 years, I served as pastor in the same church. For the 45 years of my
ministry my motto has been "No Cross, No Crown; Let me die, Let me serve. "
I married Sung in 1953 and we have one son and daughter-in-law, three daughters and
three sons-in-law, and have 9 grandchildren.
As a retired Pastor, I will continue to work as the Mission Director for the Southeastern
Jurisdiction, Korean-American Mission of The United Methodist Church to spread the Gospel
of Jesus Christ. We will be living in Atlanta, Georgia.
