EV. William Young, 82, of Rose
City, retired member of the Detroit
Conference, died April 18 at the Mio
i\Iedica l Cen ter. He was stricken with
a heart attack in t he morn ing and was
rushed to the hospital where his death
occurred about 7: 30 that evening.
A native of England, Mr. Young was
born Sept. 9, 1876, in Old Accrington,
County of La ncas ter, England, coming
to the United States as a youth. He
m et and ma rried Elizabeth Ann Wal ms ley who was a native of Scotland, in
Pawtucket, Rhode I sland, on September
15, 1898. She preceded him in death on
July G, 1949.
As a young man Mr. Young entered
the entertainm e nt field and sang in the
Booth Opera House in -Boston. After
hi s conversion he attended and was
g raduated by Moody Bible Ins titute. He
was orda ined by a council called by the
Bridgewater Baptist Church of Montrose, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 30, 1910.
F or seve ral years h e was soloist and
choir director with the R. A. Torrey
Evangelistic party. During World War
I, he was sent overseas a s a chaplain
under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A.

His Ba ptist ordination was recognized
by the Detroit Confer ence and h e was
g ranted deacon's orders by The Meth odis t Church in Sept. 1921. He was
ordained elder by Bishop Willia m Fraser
McDowell on Se pt. 17, 1922. He served
the church for n early 28 years until his
reti reme nt in 1949. He lived in Calif ornia with his son for 10 year s, going
to Rose City las t September to live with
his daughter. His last active ministry
was assisting at the Maundy Thursday
Communion Service, March 26, 1959,
where he consecrated for the la s t time
the elements symbolizing the sacrifice
of his Lord's body a nd blood. He request ed t he privilege of sing ing the
hymn "The Old Rugged Cross," at the
close of t he s ervi ce.
He is survived by two childre n, Geo t·ge
of Ten Slee p, Wyomi ng, a nd Mrs. Mary
Basing of Rose Cit y.

Fune ral services were held April 22
in Ros e City, conducted by Dr. Howard
W. Burden, district superintendent;
assis t ed by the loca l pastor, Rev. E arl
C. Fleury; Rev. Warren Ware, pasto r of
the W es t Bra nch Methodis t Church ; and
Rev. J essie Booth, pas tor of the Rose
City Free Methodis t Church. Burial
was in Fairgrove cemetery.
