For the first time in Detroit
Annual C onference hi story,
the ordination service sermon
was delivered by a lay person.
Judith Crain, a long-time
friend of Bishop Don Ott from
\Visconsin, preached the sermon Wednesday night in Dawson Auditorium. "In all humility," Crain said before the sermon, "what I hope will be
noted about this aspect of the
worship service is the public
recognition by your bishop of
the worth of the various contributions, including the voices,
of all of us who arc, together,
the body of Christ."
Crain addressed the 13
elders and II deacons using
the Biblical texts of Exodus
3: 1-12 and 4: 10-13 and
Matthew 28:16-20. "My confession," she said, "is that there
is in me profound doubt - a
persistent doubt that challenges all security and certainty, and that makes me forever.a
spiritual wonderer and wanderer.,
Crain urged those about to
be ordained "to take into the
darkness (of doubt) the Light
of the resurrected One. That is
surely the call . to which you
respond today.
"And the darkness abounds
everywhere," she added. "For
we who are veiled from the full
light of faith are all around
you. And it may be that it is in
you and through you that illumination and revelation of the
resurrected Christ can be
ours."

Crain prayed that the new
ordinands would be "observant
enough
and
wise
enough... to recognize us
(doubters) and know that we
long for the light, even when
doubt masks our longings.
"And I passionately pray
that · you will not hide in the
shadows, that you will boldly
share your own experience of
"seeing Him."
"May you hide nothing of
the Light from me- that I, too,
may bring Light to the some
who doubt."

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus:
I write to infom1 you that Kevin Zabomey has surrendered his credentials of ministry effective

of the importance of examining his life and practice of ministry in relationship to boundary
Issues.
Please pray for Kevin, his spouse Pamela, and their family in this difficult time. Letters and
cards of support and concern can be sent to the Zabomeys at P. 0 . Box 64, Fairgrove 48733.
Pastoral care is being given to the Zabomeys. Transition assistance is being arranged.
I covet your continuing prayers for all persons involved and for all of us as we practice ministry
with the desire to offer our best selves to be used by God.
I encourage you to be in supportive relationship with your covenant clergy friends if it is helpful
to you in this time . The Prayer below is suggested for your meditation.

A PRAYER FOR OUR CHURCH IN TIMES OF GRIEF AND LOSS
Dear God, our healer and deliverer, the One who can bring good out of all that looks evil and
bad, we ask for your grace and guidance this very day . We have experienced pain and loss in so
many ways over the past few years as colleagues and friends have found it necessary to leave our
clergy fellowship for one reason or another. Those moments have made each of us realize how
vulnerable we are, how we stand in need of forgiveness. and how real our limitations ~d fears
are. Yes, we have had to come face to face with our weaknesses and sinful wanderings and
acknovvledge once again our need for your restorative touch in our own iives.
We thank You for the mercy shown to us and for your comfort in our time of need. We ask that
You bring peace and renewal to each and every person that stands in need of your reassurance
this day. In the name of the risen Christ, we ask it. Amen

Sincerely,

UM~
