Charlotte's Centennial
UR Charlotte ch urch, Rev. W. B.
Oldt, pastor, has had a truly great
celebrati o n of its Cente nnia l.
No ordinary chapter i~ :Methodis t his t o ry is the early s to ry of our work in
Eaton county, where in 1834, Rev. James
Davidson organized a class of fi ve
members.
In 1845 the Eaton circuit was form ed,
including Charlotte, Be llevue, K a lamo,
Carmel, Ka lamo Mi ll s, Ve rmontville,
Oneida and Hovey 's Settleme nt, and required the service of one man on ly.
The o ldest living m embers of the
church were "recognized" a t Friday evening's ba nquet: 1878, M rs. H omer Jacques
and Miss Kath erine Pe rry; 1879, Mrs.
F. G. Wa rren; 1883, l\'irs. A. R. Stealy;
1885, Mrs. F. E . Beard; 1887, Mrs. Carson P reston, Mrs. A lma Dawson a nd
Mrs. Millie Stamm; 1888, M rs. A. P.
Spaulding. Wi th the exceptio n of Mrs.
S tamm, widow of "Dave" Stamm, all
were present. During this ceremon ia l
the two sons of Mrs. Hazel Beard Stealy
presented corsage bouquets to each of the
ladies.
Remini scences ruled the week. Dr. G.
D . Chase and Dr. R. J. Slee furnishing
m a n y of them. This bi g j ob of pay in g
off the church debt ha d fa lle n to Dr. Slee.

O

Editor DeFoe's Tribute
"The entire community feels a deep a nd
since re sense of pride a nd satisfaction in
the complete success of the several events
commemorating the o ne hundredth ann iversary of Methodism in Charlotte.
Every number-s ong and story-fro m
firs t to last seemed t o co ntribute to the
perfect w hole. lt was good to sec t he
capacity crowds at every program. The
bes t thing-fa r and away the best thingthat could happen to C harlotte would be
well fi lled churches at all r egular services.
So it was stimu lating to see m any people
sufficie n tly interested to stand during the
closing program of this centen nial celebration. n is difficult, in fact it is not
possible, to vi sualize the wholesome a nd
definite contributi on that this chu rch ha s
made t o thi s community in the past hundred years.
" In the natural o rder of th ings we bes t
remember our own t ime and peri o d but
on this occasio n it is w ell to think of th e
s trong a nd sterling characters of oth e r
days whose sacrifice a nd devo ti on laid
th e fo un dation for th e thing s we now e njoy and have come t o accept a lmos t a s a
matter of fact.
~"Rev. W. B. Oldt is a capable and conscient ious Christian leade r. Hi s work
here affords a perfect ill us tration of the
Lord's parable comparing 'a g rain of
musta rd seed' to the growth of th e
church. H e is a lways o n the j o b for the
Kingd o m of God. With him it is never
too early t o so licit a nd rec eive peopl e
into the living church. The large class
recei 1·ed in to m embership S unday morning must have g iv en him a profound and
\.pri vi leged persona l sat isfacti o n."
"-The Tribune's Notes
Dis trict Superintendent P ollock, the last
speaker a t the banquet, said: " Charlotte
has a fine name" in the Michigan confer ence. He presented th e greetings of th e
s tate and di strict bodi es of the churc h
an d spoke on S unday at the local church
on ISO years of Methodism in America.
A loving gesture in memory of Dr.
W. \ V. D iehl came at the conclusion of

the banquet. Mrs. Marie Di ehl McCall
was introduced, followed by the e nti re
a ssembly s tanding irr s ilen ce for a m oment or two fo llowed by a verbal tribute
to the m emory of "the departed b:r th e
pas tor.
Dr. A. F. 'Nay, in his sermon, mentioned " the Hubers, the De n nies, the
Harmons, the Holcombs and the :\{ikesells" a s being loyal workers of the
church.
He added that man y more
should be included but tim e pre1·e nted.
O ne of the outstanding fea tures of t he
11-Iethodist chu rch morning service i s the
work of t he junior choir under the leaders hip of i\liss Paul ine Bond. The cente nnial s ervice nu mber by this youthful
group shou ld have been appla uded.
Rev. Paul Barnhart and his lovely family were introduced as was M iss Fern
vVhecler, following Miss Dennie's readin g of the letter from the former Grace
Crooks, one of the four for eig n missionari es who ha\·e go ne ou t fro m th is church.
!:.etters were read from Mrs. Grace Crooks
vVctsteon and Miss J essie L . Marsh. Miss
Lulu Tubbs is now in Africa and t he family was given recognitio n by the int roductio n of her bro ther, Arthur T ubbs, well
know Eato n farmer. The fourth missiona ry, Miss Bessie Wood, died in t he fie ld
in I ndia.
Fully 200 pers ons s tood up at the presentation of Sunday e1·ening' s pagea nt.
:\1a ny peop le had to do with the success of t he anni \·crsary. Taking the edito rial r isk of naming a solitary person fo r
prefer red mentio n, we beli c1·e the maj o r

· Rev . .M. W. Duffey, two years pa sto r
of the local church, now s tationed at
I o nia, spoke of the fine se rvice rendered
by E. C. Harmon in bringing boys of
hig h schoo l a ge into the fellows hip o f
t he church.
Lt. Governor Dicki nson, who with :\[rs.
Dickinson, attended the dinner, said he
attended Re\·. Henry Rob inson's class
mo re or less regularly for several years,
before the bui ldin g of t he pre sent Center
Ea to n church.
Dr. D. D. Iviartin, of A lbion, a pionee r
pres iding elder of the old Albio n di strict.
gave a scho larly resume of th e church in
hi s tim e. He eu logized th e "qualities
that mad e Dr. D. F . Barnes a g reat man
among us." I t was during Dr. Barnes'
r ~g imc that th e present ch urch was built.
Dr. Martin out of his \"Cars o f sa intlv
se rvice urged the young people t o tak.e
up religion earnes tly a nd actil·ely. Th e
s tyle, logic and eloquence of hi s cxho rta tio n served to emphasize the o ld leaders hip that has mean t so mu ch to t he present day positio n of this church here, in
th e district and thro ug hout the coun try.
A class of 60 was recei1·cd into full
