EV. George W . Olmstead died at the
Arnold H ome, Detroit, on March 16,
1960, at the age of 85.
Prior to r etirement in 1947, he had
s pent 43 years In the Methodist ministry,
19 of which was sp ent as pastor of Highla nd Park First. During hi s pastorate

H e entered th e Detroit Confer ence on
Tri a l in 1904 an d ha s served the followin g churches : A u Gres, Vassar, P erry,
Detroit Palmer Memori al, Garland St.
or Ce ntral, F li nt; Adri a n, Ypsila nti,
Hig hland Park First, and Hi ghland Park
Emmanuel. H e h ad also served as
s uperinte ndent of t h e Marquette Di strict , and superint endent of the Methodi st Union in F lin t . H e founded the
Michigam me Epworth League Institute
during hi s sup erintend ency of th e Marqu ette Di strict.
H e is urvived by two da ug hters, Mr::; .

First Meth odist Church in Highland
P ark, March 19, with Bishop Marshall
R. R eed, Dr. Everett K. Seymou r , a nd
Rev. Roy C. J ohns taking part. Burial
was in Woodlaw n Cemetery.

Thank you for sending the memoir of George W. Olmstead.
wife was my grandmother ~s sister .

His

George Olmstead received his license to preach from the Catlin
Church in September of 1894 , and the notice of this in the
newspaper indicated that he was attending "theological college
in Evanston." In 1896 and 1897 he served Villa Grove, in 1898
Bethany, then Tower Hill from 1899 through 1901. In 1902 he
withdrew under unspecified charges or complaints. He had
completed the Course of Study in 1901, but I did not find any
evidence that he was actually received into full conference
membership.
