Thomas G. Badley
"... I am the Alpha and the Omega the beginning and the end.
To the thirsty I will give water as a .gift from the spring of the water of life."
Revelation 21:6
Life is full of beginnings and endings. At the outset, I focus my life on my beginnings. I start with
my birth on January 24, 1943 to Alex and Eldora Badley in Detroit, Michigan. Their Christian nurture
and love drew me into a deep faith relationship with Jesus Christ, for which I'll forever be indebted. My
beginnings in the ministry may have its origin as far back as when a 3rd grade boy accompanied his
Sunday School Superintendent (Mr. Gurdon Watson) with his accordion at the Port Huron Rescue
Mission. Throughout my high school and junior college years, I continued to express my faith through
music and testimony as part of a music trio "The Gospelaires. 11
The more formal beginnings in the ordained ministry go back to March 11 , 1962, when I received
my Local Preacher's License from my home church, the Mills Memorial Methodist Church of Port
Huron. At that time, I was a part time pastor working with youth and visitation under the shepherding
of Rev. Harry Brakeman. The first full appointment in the Detroit Conference was June 15, 1965. I give
thanks to Rev. Joe Edwards who presented me with the opportunity to serve the churches of ReaCone-Azalia. Further beginnings were presented with appointments to Macon, Harbor Beach-Port
Hope, Rochester : St. Pauls, Pontiac: Aldersgate-Elmwood; Roseville: Trinity; Hancock: First; Clio:
Bethany and Livonia: Newburg.
Among the persons who have been with me through every new beginning is my childhood
sweetheart and high school classmate, Darlene. She went with me to countless concerts and speaking
engagements as a youth. We were married June 12, 1965 (thus still on a honeymoon when we assumed
our first appointment in the conference). Out of love, we were gifted with two wonderful childrenRebecca born in 1967 and Thorn born in 1969. We were filled with joy at the addition of our daughterin-law, Lori, in 1989 who, with our son, made possible our pride and joy, our only grandchild, Kyle,
born in 1990.
Life has been good as I look back on the beginnings of my life. As I approach my retirement at the
end of this conference, I mark the conclusion of 37 years of continual service to the Detroit
Conference. I do not look on this as an ending of my life, instead as a new beginning. We look forward
to having time to pursue our recreational passion on a full-time basis. Our fifth wheel will take us
between our home town of Port Huron where our 3 surviving parents reside, and to Las Vegas, NV
where our son and family reside. It will take us to many beautiful places across our country where
we've always dreamed of traveling. However, it will never take us far from friends we've met and the
God we love, who has been there through all the beginnings and endings.

(MCA)- Five Michigan United
Methodist pastors participated in
an exchange program with
English Methodist pastors this
summer. The Advocate contacted the pastors on this side of
the water to find out how the exchange was going.
The Rev. Thomas Badley of
Clio Bethany UMC exchanged
places with the Rev. Robert Cyril
Murrish of Newquay, Cornwall.
Murrish reported that he pastors
four churches in England: Claremont, St. Columb-Minor, Crantock, and Culbert. He has 230
parishioners total. He spent six
Sundays at Clio, from July 8 to
August 19.
The two pastors met when
Murrish was showing Cornish
slides in the UP at Hancock UMC
to Cornish parishioners.
Murrish was born in Flint and
spent his first Sunday in the U.S.
at Flint Asbury, where he was
baptized . He has visited Frankenmuth and lots of Bethany
parishioners' homes. Clio is near
Flint.
THE REV. ALAN Hardy of
Newton Abbot exchanged places
with Detroit Conference Council
Director Ted Doane. In Doane's
absence he has been learning
how the UMC in America works,
under the training of the Revs.
Stan Sutton and Bill Verhelst of
the Conference staff.
Doane is at Newton Abbot Circuit serving as pastor of six churches. Three of the churches are
in Dartmoor National Park.
The Rev. Carol Johns of
Owosso UMC traded places with
the Rev. Brian James Snellgrove
of Gravesend, Kent. Johns was in
England from May 28 to J.uly ~·
She was in an urban sett1ng 1n
Gravesend. She pastored at
Milton Road, in the city, Dene
Holm, a housing estate , and
Shorne, a sm9,1 1village . Because
of the availability of lay preachers, the pastor does not preach
in every church every Sunday.
"I came back more appreciative of the American UMC,"
Johns said . "I appreciated the
differences and the opportunity to
serve in England and experience
the faith within the church there.
But I came back very glad my
ancestors had chosen to become
American. Every Michigan pastor
should try it at least once. People
couldn 't have been more gracious."
The Rev. Gilson Miller of Highland UMC exchanged places with
the Rev. John David Howard,
who pastors in W. Smethwick (an
inner city church) and.St. ~o~ ~s,
less than a mile apart 1n Birmingham, 100 · miles northwest of
London.
HOWARD WAS IN Highland
from June 29 to Aug. 5, then touring the Rockies for two weeks.
The Highland church is southeast
of Flint in Oakland County, "an
affluent area compared to what
I' m used to," Howc;trd says.
Most of the services during his
time here were done in English
style. Songs of Praise is a service
in which parishioners choose a
hymn to sing and tell why they
like it. Howard and his wife were
heavily involved, in the church's
Vacation Bible School.
While here he visited Cass
Community UMC, Baldwin Ave.
Community Center in Pontiac,
and the Pontiac Alternative Transitional Housing. He had a long
talk with Detroit East District
Superintendent Phylemon Titus.
In England people get dependent on benefits, Howard said,
while in the U.S. they can slip
through the benefit net. Local
governments in England are by
statute to house all fam ilies.
" There are signs of God's
grace that become evident as
time goes on ," Howard said. " It
gives hope."
The Rev. Mary Albery of
Berkley First UMC has spent the
summer in Liverpool. Her exchange pastor is the Rev. John
Arthur Fisher. Albery arrived in
London June 25 and was due
back Aug. 9. She phoned a
parishioner in the U.S. who had
heart bypass surgery.
Fisher pastors Crosby church
in Liverpool and Moor Lane
church. While here he has been
taken to Tiger baseball games,
Meadowbrook to hear the Detroit
Symphony, Detroit Metropolitan
Church and Belle Isle. He participated in a midweek service at
Berea St. Paul's and a partnership picnic .
