ConOern ing Call t o Ministry:
My moth e r informe d me t hat she had dedicated me to God
before my birth. She was anxious t hat I ent e r the mi nistry in my y outh.
I ~ras urg ed to a tte nd our church college by my pare nts and minister; but
I did not have what I c onsidered to be a proper urge for such a voca tion.
My int e r e st was in s c ienti fic subjects s uch as botany , chemistry e tc.
Thus I chose to attend what was the n Mi chiean Agr icultural Colle ge.
Aft er graduation I returned t o the farm t o appl y the principles in which
I had received instruction. However I was a l way s de epl y interested in
Christian activities and always t augh t a Sunday School clas s . Fr eque ntly
I ras called u pon to speak up on some subject related t o the Chu r ch and
G.hristian work. Jt was following an e xtemporan eous spee ch I ga ve that
Dr . A. E .".Iri ght, who wa s our pastor a t the time , a s ked me if I had ever
thought I should be a minist e r. I rep lied that I had some times thou ght
of it . rte said he would like to talk with me about the matter. ~~e partJL,d
with the anticipation of having such a conve rs a tion i n the near futu re .
\Vith in thr ee days, he suddenly died, then an inn e r voice a sked me, "What
will you do now? " Iviy answer wa s p:i ven the foll owing Sunday as I p r epared
a nd g ave my fir st ser mon in t he home church. 111embers of t he c ong re gation
a sked t hat I c ontinue to serve as t he pas t or. Uur Confe r ence ~upe rint en
de nt, Dr. J . F . Hatton , gave me a license to preach and appo inted me to tq_e
va cancy for the rernSinde r of the Conference year. When I came to Conference , he asked concerning my pl ans for the fut ure. I re plied t hat J cons i. c1 e red it wise t o a:rpo i.. nt a new mini ster to t.he. home Church and that I
expe cted to cont inue as a worker in the same. Gre at l y to my surprise ,
he said , 11 I have a f eel ing that you are the man I should send t o the
Sodus Charge. 11 My reply was, "I f you are of that opinion, I cannot say
no, but wi ll go. "
The witness of the Spirit withi n my li fe as we ll as t he r esults which
have fo l l owed firml y convince me that t h is was God 1 s manner of calling
me to his servmce aft e r I had made qui t e thorough preparation to serve
a rural community. This pr e parati on i nclude d the securing of sufficient
of matrial wealth to ~ nabl e my wife and I to undertake t h i s task, as it
required t he spe nd i ng of cons ide r abl e amount of our own cap ita l to live
and de v e lop the work during t hose first years . God works i n mysterious
ways t o carry f orward his p l an.
