April 3, in St. Mary's Hos pital, LaSalle,
Illin ois. He and Mrs. Barkley were
en route to Boulder , Colorado, to visit
t heir son John and f amily when he became serious ly ill, and was taken to
St. Mary's Hospi tal. J ohn W. Barkley
was born in LaBelle, Misso m·i, Apl"il 2-t,
1909, son and g randson of Methodis t
mini ste rs. He wa s a grad uate of
Mi ssouri State College, with a B.S.
deg r ee in ed ucation. Hi s first mini stry
was in th e chmch that had been served
by his gran dfather in Missouri. He then
a ttended a nd was g raduated f r om t he
Bos ton Univer s ity School of Theology
a nd whil e th ere served the Old Mys tic,
Connecticut, Methodist Ch urch. The
Uni on Colleg e of Kentucky conferred the
honora ry degree of Doctor of Divinity.
He se rved pastorates in the Northwest
Indiana Confe rence from 1940 to 1953
when he became an assoc iate mini ster at
Metropolitan Church, Detroi t. In 1954
he was a ppointed to St. Mark's Church,
and in 1961 to Calvary. Since coming
to the Detroit Confer ence, Dr. Barkley
had been a ctive on va rious conference
committees a nd com missions, including
the Commiss ion on Minis terial Training ,
Conference Board of Education, Confere nce Board of Social Economic Studies,
Area Commiss ion on Higher Education,
and past pres ident of the Detroi t Pas tors'
Union. He was a 32nd degree Mason
of the Valley of Detroit. He wa s active

Dr. Barkley
in the Scouting program in Indiana,
having been Scoutmaster and was
awarded the Scouter's Award and
Scouter 's Key. In 1956 he and Mrs.
Barkley s pent s om e time in Mexico
study ing Methodist Missions ; and in
1959 he was sent to South America for
the General Board of Evangelism of
The Methodis t Church. Surv-iving are
hi s wife, Ruth; a so n, John Allen; granddaughter s, Beth Elaine a nd Margar et
June ; hi s moth er, Mrs. P ear l W onderly
of Hurdland, Mi ssouri; a s is ter , Mrs.
Harold Loft, Moberly, Missouri; and a
brother, Clarence E. Barkley, Liberty,
Missouri. Services were held in Calvary
Church April 6 with Bishop Dwight E.
Loder a ssisted by dis trict s upe rintendent s, Dr. J esse DeWi tt a nd Dr. Merle
Broyles ; Rev. Mary Wagoner, associa te
pas tor of Calva i'Y ; a nd Calvary's Chancel
Choir. Burial took place in Acacia P ark
Cemetery.
