FOR I MMEDIATE RELEASE, PLEASE:

The Reverend Joy A. Barrett was elected to Deacon's Orders, and
received as a Probationary Member of the Detroit Annual Conference
of the United Methodist Church on Tuesday evening, June 1, as the
14lst consecutive Annual Session began in Dawson Auditorium on the
campus of Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan.

On Saturday, June S,she was ordained a Deacon in the United Methodist
Church by Bishop Edsel A. Ammons, Resident Bishop of The Michigan
Area of the United Methodist Church.

Daughter of Mr. George Barrett and Mrs. Bet ty Schnople of Bay
City,

the Reverend Barrett was graduated from Western High School

in Auburn in 1976.

She received a B.A. degree from Michigan State

University in 1980; and is presently enrolled as a student at
Boston University School of Theology in Boston, Massachusetts.

announced the appointment of
the Rev. Joy Barrett to the
D etroit Cabinet as superintendent of the Ann Arbor District
beginning July 1, 199 8.
Barrett was born in Pittsfield,· Mass., cam e to Michigan
as a small child and graduated
from Bay City Western High
S chool. She has an undergradu ate degree from Michigan
State University an d received
her Masters of Divinity degree
from Boston University School
ofTheology in May 1983.
Barrett has served congregations at Gordonville and
Sterling Heights and is currently the pastor of State Street
United Methodist Church in
Saginaw where she has served
since 1993.
Barrett h as served in various
District and Conference capacities throughout her ministry. She has been active in
camping ministries, served as
the Board of Ordained Ministry chairperson from 1992 to
1996, and currently is an elected member of the General
Board of Higher Education
and Ministry. She has been an
elected delegate to both the
1992 and 1996 G eneral and
Jurisdictional Conferences.
In making this appointment, Bishop Ott has said of
Rev. Barrett: "Commending
this assignment are her abilities
to guide and nurture the development of congregation s and
their lay and clergy leadership.
She is a repeatedly recognized·
leader with broad connectional
experience. Her excellence in
congregational ministry and
lead ership in clergy developm ent will assist the district
churches and newly focused
conference mission direction.

Of her new appointed Barrett said: " I accept this new

Barrett's spouse, Robert
Long, has an undergraduate
degree in biopsychology and
philosophy, as well as a Masters ofTheological Studies. He
is employed as National Director of Facilities with P residium, Inc. in Mt. Clemens.
Both Joy and Rob enjoy the
out of doors, and wide-open
spaces, reading and bicycling.
Joy also enjoys doing counted
cross stitch. T h ey will move to
the District parsonage for the
July 1, 1998 appointment. A
service installation will be held
on Sept. 27.

The Reverend Joy A. Barrett was born in western Massachusetts and spent her early
years in Florida. At age eight she moved with her family to Bay City, Michigan. She
was graduated from Bay City Western High School in 1976, from Michigan State
University in 1980, and from Boston University School of Theology in 1983.

She has served Gordonville UMC, 1983-1988
Sterling Heights UMC, 1988-1993
Saginaw: State Street UMC, 1993- 1998

PersonalJoy is married to Robert Long. Rob is the national director of facilities and
asset management with Presidium, Inc. in Mt. Clemens, MI. Together they enjoy
gardening, bicycling, and cooking. Rob is an avid reader; from time to time Joy
snatches a few minutes for counted cross-stitch. Much of their free time is devoted to
their family companion, Jazmine, a four-year old English Shepherd dog.
