and ecumenical experiences

(pj~

ADRIAN (MCA)- The retirees
showered a colorful cornucopia
of experiences on their audience,
from serving the Malasia
Singapore Conference, to coming from Swedish Methodism, to
being ordained at the uniting conterence of the United Brethren
and Evangelical churches.
The Rev. Pat Zimmerman presented the retirees to Detroit Annual Conference on the stage at
Dawson Auditorium the afternoon
of June 6. They represented 405
years of service.
William and Shirley Frayer
consider themselves " amongst
the people richly blessed by the
Lord and people ." William was a
man of little hope after many
heart surgeries and procedures,
but he lives on to carry out the
ministry to shut-ins at Nardin
Park United Methodist Church in
Farmington Hills. He has been in
the ministry for 43 years.
Robert and Mary Evelyn
·secrist- Robert has found satisfaction in pastoral counseling
and hospital ministry. He would
like to be remembered as a friend
and sometimes felt constrained
by "the tyranny of other people's
expectations."
Joy and Dorothy Arthur wants people to recall him as a
pastor who put a little joy and
happiness into the ministry and
enjoyed singing the Lord's song ,
" Amazing Grace."
Arthur
and
Frieda
Spafford-Arthur would like to
be remembered as remaining
faithful to his ordination vows and
helping the congregations to live
out their commitment to Jesus
Christ. Frieda was a lay delegate
to General and Jurisdictional conferences. Arthur was ordained at
the uniting conference of the
United Brethren and Evangelical
churches in 1951.
Hoon Hee and Pat Wong Hoon Hee has served the
Malasia Singapore, Pacific Northwest, and Michigan conferences.

life ," he says. He is a naturalized
American citizen. "If you can't
tithe, don 't preach on tithing ," he
says.
Donald Bates served 331/2
years m the mm1stry. He started
in 1949 and says, "My life was
changed when I took my first
appointment ... I would not have
felt fulfilled if I had missed the call
of Christ. "
George and Alice Hawk George is a local elder retiring
after 32 years in the ministry.
"The circuit rider became my
model throughout my pastoral
career. One foot in the Church ,
one in industry."
Roy an~ Beverly Forsyth Roy would like to be remembered
as "a people's pastor reaching
beyond the immediate. " Beverly
remembers many wonderful and
long-lasting friendships. Roy says
the hymn "Lift High the Cross"
symbolizes their ministry.
.,
Richard and Nan Griffith "Perhaps the most challenging
and blessed experiences ," Dick
writes, "have been in the city of
Detroit. It was there, especially
when I had the privilege of being
a white pastor serving multiethnic congregations, that my
faith was most seriously challenged and most immeasurably
enriched."
Mary Neil retired as an associate pastor at Owendale and
Gagetown UMCs. "At the time I
entered the ministry," she writes,
" I indicated that I was willing to
serve churches struggling to survive. The people of WhitefieldGrace have a story to tell that 1
believe we all need to
hear ... When they closed it was
with joy and anticipation ... They
declared that their offerings
would be serving God as they
moved to other churches. No
longer would all their fund!? go for
gas and electric bills. Those
funds could go for mission . As a
Detroit Conference we need to
hear that call clearly."

Michael and Sharon Grajcar
retired from the Onaway and
Millersburg UMCs.
Eric and Florence Hammer Eric is grateful for "the joy and
happiness to be found in the
Good News." Florence says, "I
never felt I had to change my
ways or pretend to be something
I wasn't. " Eric came to the Conference
from
Swedish
Methodism, which is no longer
around . "We made a commitment to be a team ," he says,
"and don't apologize for saying
to a conference, you get two for
the price of one."
Robert and Ethel Dobson are
retiring from a five-year leave of
absence. He wishes his ministry
to be remembered for its personal nature, for visitation and
caring.
Rodney and Carol Peterson
retired from Birmingham: First
UMC in Oct. 1990, just one
month short of a record 39 years
as diaconal minister of music. D
