The most important people in my life go
first; and that's my family. Betty and I will
celebrate 33 years of marriage this fall. We
have three children, all married and , and
five grand children. Our oldest daughter,
Jennifer, lives in South Bend, Indiana with
her four daughters and husband. She is a
musician and works for Selmer as a testertechnician. Our son, Joseph, is an opera
singer living in New York with his wife, and
has sung for the National Lyric Opera as
well as the New York Metropolitan Opera.
And, our youngest daughter, Beth , lives in
F lorida with her husband and new baby.
Beth wi ll pursue a Master's in fi lm this fa ll
at the University of Florida.
Betty, my wife, is a professional business
woman who is the executive director of
human resources department being
responsible for the needs of 1 ,500
employees.
My ministry will not end with my
retirement, in fa ct in many ways it is only
statiing; nevertheless, a few fa cts about t he
past. I have served as a United Methodist
minister for 23 years. During that time, I
had the privilege of pastora l appointments
and be ing appointed to extension ministries
as a pastora l counse lor and chaplain. One

of the great highlights of my life was being
the founding pastor of a new church. I hope
one day we re-discover the value of new
beginnings. Church planting is an exciting
ve nture, filled with hard work, and yet
resulting is great reward.
My undergraduate work was done at a fine
United M ethodist school, the U niversity of
Eva nsville , in Evansville, Indiana. I then
attended United Theological Seminaty,
which allowed me during my second year of
se minaty to attend two dive rgent programs ,
Notre D ame and M ennonite Biblical
Seminary. I then returned for my senior
year to United where I graduated with a
Master of Divinity. I flllihered my
education my completing a Doctor of
Ministly from the Lutheran School of
Theology at Chicago. My last degree is a
Doctor of Psychology from the Graduate
Theological Foundation (GTF) , which is
affiliated with Oxford in England. Within
the last few weeks I was named the "Albert
E. Ellis Professor of Pastoral Psychology" at
GTF. During my "retirement years" one of
my intentions is to provide training and
supervision for pastoral counselors,
emphasizing addictions t raining as I am a
"Certified Clinical Supervisor" in fi led of
addictions. I will be work with t hose
attending G raduate Theological
Fo undation offering graduate credit
towards their degrees. I continue to hold a
license a Licensed Mental H ealth
Counselor and numerous add iction
ce rtifications as we ll as being a Ce1iified
Criminal Justice Specialist.
I am very grateful to the Detroit Ann ual
Conference for the privilege of serving, if
only for a brief t ime, albeit being a
transplant from Indiana. Michigan is home,
howeve r, as I grew up in the 'Thumb" of
Michigan and my wife was born in t he
Detroit area. It is wonderful to be home
and I trust that in my new relationship to
the DAC, I will be able to make a
significant contribution in ministry.
