John Bunney was born Sept. 16, 1883 in Cambourne,
Cornwall, England, the son of James Henry Bunney and
Grace Carlyon Bunney.
As a young man he was employed in one of the
mines where he received a severe leg injury. As a result of this he was transferred into the office of the
mine and employed as a bookkeeper.
He served as a
local preacher at the Sunday night services in the
surrounding churches.
On May 31, 1910 he was married to Hattie Trezona
in the Wesley Chapel at Cambourne.
In January of 1920 he came to the United States
of America and was assigned to a church in Salina,
Kansas.
In June of the same year, Mrs. Bunney and the
three children, Lillian age 9, Marjorie age 6, and
Leonard age 3, came from England to the home he had
established for them in Kansas.
During the first
year 1n Kansas, Mrs. Bunney developed a severe heart
condition due to the hot climate.
As a result of this
he was transfered to Michigan in 1921 and was assigned
to Mohawk in the Upper Pininsula.
His Deacon credentials were presented to him by
Bishop Henderson on September 23 , 192) at the Confer-

ence at Detroit, Michigan.
At that time he
was ~;

assigned to the circuit at Baltic, Tri Mountain and
Painesdale where he preached for two years.
His Elder Credentials were presented to him by
Bishop Francis J. McConnell on September 20, 1925 at
the Conference at Flint, Michigan.
He was then assign
ed to Newberry where he preached 4 years.
While at
Newberry, he also held services at the State Hospital
on Sunday afternoon taking turns with the other ministers in the town.
While in Newberry, the older
daughter, Lillian, graduated from High School in 1929.
At the conference of 1929 he was transfered to
the church at Crystal Falls where he served for six
years.
While at Crystal Falls the younger daughter,
Marjorie, graduated from High School and as she planne
to attend Albion ·aollege, he asked to be transferred
to a church in the Lower Peninsula and in 1935 he was
transfrred to Manchester which included the Napoleon
church.
He served both churches for several years
until the Napoleon church was put on a separate charge
While in Manchester, Leonard graduated from Hi gh Schoo
During the summer of 1937, he and Mrs. Bunney w
went to England and spent several weeks with relatives
and friends.
While there he preached in the Centenary
Church at Cambourne which fulfilled one of his boyhood

. desires.
This was the only time he returned to Eng-
land although Mrs. Bunney had made a previous visit
while they were at Crystal Falls.
Mrs. Ha ttie Bunney passed away on May 21, 1947
after an illness of several years.
He later was
married to Grace Dresselhouse of Manchester.
He serv-
ed the Manchester church for 15 years which was his
longest pa storate.
At the end of the 15 years he re-
tired and continued to live in Manchester. He loved
the work of the church and one of his chief concerns
was his sermons on which he spent a great deal of time
and often wrote them over several times before he was
satisfied with them.
He loved people and the visits
with the members and friends of the churches gave him
a great deal of satisfaction and enjoyment.
After a brief illness, he passed away at Mercy
Hospital, Jackson, Michigan on September 17, 1954,
one day after his 7lst birthday.
Funeral services
were held at Manchester Methodist Church on September
20.

Oak Grove Cemetery, Manchester.
Burial was at

wife, 2 daughters, Lillian Leeson of Manchester,
Marjorie Aris of Albion nad 1 son, Leonard of Clinton,
and 7 grandchildren.
Also a brother and 2 sisters and
4
several nephews and nieces in England.
He was active in the Order of the Eastern Star
and Masonic Lodge at Manchester.

ATTIE MAY BUNNEY, wife of
Rev. John Bunney, died at the University of Michiga n Hospital Monday
nig ht, April 21, 1947, fo llowing an illness of several months which she bore
with fine Chri stian fortitude a nd faith.
She was cheerful to the very last hour of
her life.
She was bom on January 21, 1890, at
Midway, Pa., the daughter of Wm. and
Lillian Trezona. Early in her life her
parents took her to England where she
received her education and became an
active member of the Bible Christian
Church.
She was married to John Bunney May
31, 1910, at Cambom, Cornwall, England. In 1920 she retumed to America
with her husband and their three children.
With her husband she served the following pastoral charges : Oneida, Kansas ; and in Michigan: Mohawk, Painesdale, N ewberry, Cl.'y:;ta l Fall s and Manchester. In the parspnage life she found
an atn1osphere natural to her devotional
spirit. She loved S o worship her Lord
and to do the work of His Kingdom. She
was a faithful and helpful pastor's wife
and a loving and wonderful mother.
Mrs. Bunney is s urvived by her husband, Rev. John Bunney; two daughters,
Mrs. Laurin Leeson of Manchester and
Mrs. Maynard Ari s of Albion; a son,
Leonard Bunney of Manchester; s ix
gra ndchildren; two brothers, William
and John Trezon a of Cambom, Cornwall, England.
Funeral services were held April 24
at the Manchester Methodist Church /
with Rev. Luther Butt, district superin-(
tendent, Rev. Addis Leeson and Rev.l
Joseph Dutton officiating. Burial was in
the Manchester cemetery.

died Aug . 24. She was 91, and a resident<

daughter of Albert and Emma (Seyme
Dresselhouse. She graduated from Mar
chester High School in 1913. She marrie
the Rev. Bunney on Dec. 2, 1947. She worl
ed for many years as a bookkeeper.

belonged to King's Daughters and the OrdE
of Eastern Star. Rev.Bunney predecease
her on Sept. 16, 1954. Survivors include
niece and her husband, Helen and Egbe
Treat of Manchester. The Rev. Hayden Ca
ruth held funeral services on Aug. 27.
