regarding the Recoggition service

You are right in the matter of my retirement, as much as I regret
that I have felt it necessary, or at least best. I feel that I
can no longer give what the churches of today deserve and must have.
No one knows my lim:j..tations as much as I know them, and feel them.
There just is no short cuts to t his task today . I am glad to step
down and give the task to younger and better trained men who have
more v~tality than I have. The nearer the time of retirement comes
the more confused the future seems to be. I haven't the least idea
what lies ahead. Often I have wished these last few months since the
passing of Irene that I had someone with whom I could counsel and
who understood. I have very few plans for the future and somehow
\..E~ seem so useles s s ometimes;

I feel that I have had a good ministry here these t welve years and that
I am leaving the church in a condition that another can go on and do far
greater things than I have been able to see done. I have received 125
members since coming here and a constant increase in many departments
of church life. Back of me, and wit h me,has been many who have made this
possible. I wish only the best in success and progress for both church
and my successor. Believe me.
~s to the time to be allowed to those of us who are retiring, I trust that
it will be very little. I have nothing to saY. that I know of except to
thank the Michigan Conference for findi~eAfh the first place, and then
giving me a place to serve. I have had nothing but good churches and
good people to work with. I deeply regret that this could not have happened
while Irene was with me that nwe might have been able to enjoy each other
more than it is seemed possible with the responsibility of this church,
and other churches. It is selfish to wish her back, but I am haoesick for
her and my heart is heavy today. Plasse do not expect me t o say very much
at conference-- I have nothing ~erewith I should boast. The record has
~:en written and is a ~art of t he history of our conference . I wish the
~ecord was a better one .
