died Sunday, April 17, a t the age of 86.
~ He was holding a revival meeting in
Gres ram, Oregon, when taken s ick.

At 15 years of age he was converted
in his own home, and at the age of 17
preached his f irst sermon . When 19
yea r s old he was licensed as a Methodist minister a nd joined the Detroit
Confer ence in 1893. He served th e Burt,
New Lothrop, Hadley, Perry, Durand,
and Milford churches and in 1907 became conference evangelist.
Twenty-five years of his life were devoted to Chris tian education. He was
acting president of Cleveland Bible College, now Malone Coll ege f rom 19211936 ; president of John Fletcher College in University Park, Iowa, 19361946. Before entering this f ield h e
pas tored t he Detroit Holiness Associa tion fo r five years.
He ma rri ed Catherine Cronkl'ig ht in
1892. F our daug hters wer e born t o
th is union, Blanche who died at 18 year s
of a ge; Mrs. Grace H eneks, Mrs. Helen
Cupp, and Mrs. Celia Collins. Mrs.
Butler died in 1918. I n 1921 he marrieJ
Selma Schilling and one daug h ter, Mrs.
Ruth O'Brien survives this union.
