H e was one of the older ch ild r en of a
fam il y of twelve. A t the age of fourt een hi s school ing was b rought to a n
end by a serious accident to hi s fathe 1·
wh ich made his full time servi ces at
home a necess ity for s everal wet' k~. It
was h is fa t he r 's a m bition t hat Wiliiam
sho t~ l d b~come a lawyer, but that p rofess iOn dtd not a ppeal to him.

he changed to heavier and· st a nda rd

pri vil eges of a nig ht school h eld i n t h e

At the age of nineteen he was, to u se
h is own words , " g loriously sayed" in a
r ev ival. meeting, wh ich changed his
wh ? le l!fe ~la.n ..At on ce he becam e ver y
active 111 Chnstlan work, and soon was
asked by h is pa stoT to p reach at an out a p point m e n~ as a supply.

Canada united, which left a large s urpl us of preachet·s.
In 18B3 he came to Mich igan and
joined the Detroit confer rnce at its session in t he Court St. church, Fli nt. Durnig his thirty-tlnee years ' minis try in
the conference l1C sen·ed t he followi ng
c11urches and ch arges : Clifford, L a keport, Adair, Armada , Dryd en a nd Att ica, Port Sanilac, Centra l Mine, Opech e<', I ronwood, Auburn, Stand ish a nd
Stirling, Wood sid e Ave., Bay City, Baltic, Ma ni stique, R e public, Iron Mountain . . In 1908 h e took a supernumer ary
rela l1011 for health reason s and served
two y<'a r s in t he Eas t Main<' Conference.
And for the s ame r <'a!'ons h e retired i n
191G and located in Uxbridg-e, Ontar io.
The funera l services were held i n t h e
Uni ted Church in U xbridge which h e
attend<'cl and where he taught a S unday school class for m a n y YNtrs, and h is
body wm: la id away in the family lot
n ea r by.
H e was united in marriage to Martha A lice P age in 1 88 ~ who preceded
h im to the heavenly home in 1835. Evalinn, t heir only ch ild, born in 1885, d ied
at th e early a ge of 1:}.
Mi ~ N~ltie, _Pa g~, a niece, has lived in
th e fam ily for many yca'f"s and ha s been
a great bl c:-:sing with her gracious and
loving mini ~ tri <'s to both brother and

and ve ry devoted to t he chu rch a nd its
minist ry. H e r swee t d isposit ion. her lllinist ry of m usic, ami her ,;elf-sacrific ing
spiri t made her li fe a bened iction to h12r
fr iend s a nd the churches s he ser ved.
A daughter, E\·alcna, was bc:,rn to th em
and depa rted thi s life in her thirteent h
year.

pas tor of the United church, assisted by
Rev. :-rr. E lford, Rev. A. E. Owen, a nd
