Charles Preston Ostrom was born on a farm three

miles from Okemos, Michigan, February 2, 1871, son of

Villiam Henry Ostrom, of Dutch descent, and Mary

Gidley Ostrom of good American stock.
Charles had two sisters and a

brother~
Clara, who married Bert Cash, deceased, is the
mother of four children and resides in
Grant, Michigan;
Ida, who married Edwin Fickett and she is
deceased;
i l liam Henry, who married Mary Copeland and
resides in Newaygo, Michigan.
When Charles Preston Ostrom was eight years of
age the family moved to Newaygo and Charles attended
the rural school known as the Marengo Prairie Scho ol
in Brooks township, Newaygo county.
February 9, 1892, he was married to Almira
daughter of James Bills.

Charles Preston Ostrom was married a second
time June 28, 1916, to Effie _Rosetta Bo?er, daughter

She was born near
Kendallville, Indiana, and attended school near her
childhood home and later the Mt. Pleasant high
school, the Ferris Institute and Ypsilanti State
Normal, after which she taught school for several

years, most of the time in Mt. Pleasant and two years

in St. Louis, Michigan.

Mr. Ostrom's parents were members of the Meth-
t

! odist church and the father served as Sunday school
i

superintendent and as a trustee and steward.

Charles was eighteen years of a ge he became deeply

concerned about his relation to the Saviour.
In
the background was the Christian home and his school
mates were talking about living for Christ.
He
became so much affected that he ate no supper and
no breakfast the following morning and on the evening

after he walked five miles to the Methodist church
·I
in Newaygo where meetings were being held by the
pastor, a Mr. Cutler, and a local preacher named
Swarthout.
On the first Sunday in March, 1889, he,

and a brother joined the Methodist
I church.

"I made fun of her.
One day while plowing in the field I had a vision of
a
seeing people going over a precipice into hell, and
another vision of an altar filled with seekers." ·
Over thirteen hundred have s ought Christ during his
ministry.
He was twelve years in the crusade work.
Ralph Winn, Warner Hinterman and three others were
converted in his meetings and entered the ministry.
He s upplied the Methodist church at Cooper in
1904, including Alamo, and in 1905 supp lied Kendall;
was received on trial in the Michigan Annual Confer...
ence in 1907 and into full connection and ordained
Deacon by Bishop Cranston in 1910, and ordained

Mr. Ostrom led in the erection of church buildings at Delton and Stanwood in 1923.
On
many
charges the churches and parsonages have been
rep a ited, the churches providing the ma terials and
h e doin g the work.
Since retiring he has sup plied
pulpits and assisted the p astor at 1at. Pleasant.
He was at one time a Prohibitionist and later a
Republican.
He belonged to t he F. & A.
