THE REVEREND MR. L. LAVERNE FINCH , 86, died on November 7,
1987 in Chelsea. He was born September 3 , 1901 in Shiawasee
County, Michigan, the son of Arthur and Emma Finch. He
graduated from DePauw University and Boston School of
Theology. DePauw awarded him a Doctor of Divinity degree.
On May 14, 1932, he was married to Willa Batt, of Richmond,
Indiana. She survives. A son was killed in an airplane
accident while serving in the Navy.
Laverne joined the Detroit Conference on Trial in 1929,
and Full Membership in the West Michigan Conference in 1933.
After four pastorates in West Michigan, he transferred to the
Detroit Conference in 1935, and became Associate Pastor at
Ann Arbor First United Methodist Church, under the late
Bishop Charles Brashares. Other Appointments were : Morenci,
Detroit Epworth, Flint Central, Wyandotte First, and Saginaw
Jefferson Avenue.
From 1954 to 1960 he was Superintendent
of the Ann Arbor District.
Laverne was a good pastor--faithful to the people in his
churches, a friend of parsonage families on his District.
He served the Conference on many important committees. Firm
in the belief that the People of God , were called to mission,
to preach the Kingdom of God, he worked to bring persons
into the new life and to change society. Discipleship and
stewardship was his way of life.
