RTHUR BERTRAM FOCKLER was
born near Deckerville in Sanilac
County, May 14, 1884, the son of William
and Thresa F ockler, and died on ·November 18, 1949.
In 1902 he married Olive Medcoff and
to this union were born six children:
Vemon B. of Lapeer ; Mrs. Hazel B.
Hales of Bellevue; Ronald K. of Keego
Harbor; and three others who died in
infancy.
Mr. and Mrs. Fockle1· moved to Lans ing in 1905 and united w it h 1\'lain Street
:Methodist Protestant Church. Arthur
felt the call to the mini str y when only
19 years of age, but felt the need of
'Preparation. While residing in L ansing
11e at tended night school unt il his health
fa iled and he was compelled to leave
factory work. They moved to a farm
n ear Dimondale where he took a n active
'J)art in the church work. Soon ther eafter
:he was appointed pastor of this church
a nd Grovenburg. I n 1918 he became pas!
t or of North Branch Circuit and was admit t ed into the former Methodist Protestant Conference in 1919. H e · was
ordained in 1925. Other charges served
by Mr. Fockler were Columbiaville,
Genesee, Porter and W akelee, Ingham
Circuit, and F ostoria of which he was
pastor a t t he t ime of his death.
H is was a f n1itful min istr y and those
going into the active ministry of The
Methodis t Church a s a result included
Rev. Edward Swaddling, now 1·etired and
living near Richland; Rev. William
Smith of Whittemor e, Rev. Eli Richa r d
of Davison, Rev. Etsel Stubbs of Keego
Harbor, Rev. Leo Burch of Freeland, and
Elwood Walker from t he Ingham Circuit, now attending Huntington College,
H untington, Ind.
Brother Fockler was always evangelist ic in his preaching a nd a good minister
of J esus Christ. He k new how to minis ter to the needs of his people in times of
joy and of deep sorrow. H e was a frieml
of young and old alike. He ha d been a
patien t sufferer of a hear t ailment for
several months, but determined to carrv
on the Lord's wor k.

He is su rvived by his good w ife and
helpmate th r ough the years ; the two
sons and one da ughter; ten grandchildren; two brothers, W illiam and Lew of
Deckerville; and one sis ter, Mrs. William Bolsby of Sandusky.
Funeral services were held in Fostor ia
and Millville Methodist churches on Monday, November 21, with Rev. Alfred
Landon, superintendent of t he Saginaw
Bay District, presiding. At Fostoria at
9:30A.M. Mr. Arville St. John sang. Dr.
E. Ray Willson, super intendent of the
Port Huron District; Revs. Everett A.
Smith, W. H. Clark, Georg e Merton, Eli
D. Richard, Leo Burch, Fred Hart and
Fred Maitland participated. At Millville
Mr s. Donald Swanson and Mrs. DeLa ney Coope1· sang two numbers. Revs.
Ed\\'ard Bachus, Luren Strait, Joseph
Dibley and Elwood W a lke r participated.
Mr. Landon spoke words of appreciat ion in behalf of The Methodist Church
and es pecially t he Detroit Conference
f o1· s uch a servant of God who had
served so f aithfully through t he years.
