BURKS and HYDRIAN
ELLIOTT, both of the Detrvit

Conference, received their
D.Min. degrees from Drew
Theological School in May.
Dr. Burks has been pastor of
.-----=,...-----.Flint Charity
UMC since
1996. The
154-member
congregation
was formed
of a black
UMC and a
white UMC
and remains
integrated .
Burks directs
the Black Methodists for
Church Renewal Choir. His
dissertation topic was: "A
Strategy for Preparing a Congregation for Wholistic Growth
Through Self-Reflection and
Community Study." Dr. Ellion
has been pastor of the 15 0member Trinity Faith UMC
since January. .-----,
His dissertation project
was completed through
the Resurrection UMC in
Detroit,
where the
pastor served
from 199398. With a
dissertation topic of "Evangelism: Black Churches Working
with at Risk Youth," Elliott
graduated with distinction for
his "research, execution and
overall leadership." This distinction was in large part due
to the cooperation of laity in
the church community, and
residents in the area.
