Fifty Years Anniversary
Fifty Years Preaching
Fifty Years Conference
o/lo/76. People
Rev . and Mrs. M . R. Everett, 2970 Cady
Dri ve, Brighton, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 12.
The celebration started early by spending
Ho ly Week in the Holy Land. The Zion United
Methodist Church of Detroit recognized their
anniversary on Colden Years Sunday, May 2,
and the altar flowers in the West Side United
Methodist Church of Ann Arbor May 16 were
in their honor.
They celebrated with their three children
and eight grandchildren during Colden Anniversary Week. Their children are: Kenneth , of
Brighton, Gloria E. Crabtree of Ann Arbor,
and Robert of Adrian .
Mr. Everett has preached SO years and
attended SO annual conferences, and the
couple plan to attend this year.
THEIR LIVES AND EVENTS T:
\
Rev. and Mrs. M.A. Everett
REV. AND MRS. M.R. EVERETT of
Brighton observed their diamond wedding
anniversary on May 12. The wedding
celebration was held on May 17 at First
UMC of Howell and was hosted by their
children, Kenneth of Brighton, Gloria of
Ann Arbor and Robert of Adrian , as well
as their grandchildren. In 1925 the conference sent Myron Everett to White
Pigeon . Esther's church put on a play,
" The Dream That Came True," and asked Myron to perform the role of Esther's
husband in the play. It was performed
eight times. The couple gave 20 years to
the Riverside Boys and Girls Camps at
Buchanan and 20 years at the Lakeside
Camp at Brighton as directors.
Detroit Conference Cane passes
to the Rev~· Myron R. Everett
..z
RONALD
A.
BRUNGER
Archivist, Detroit Coni.
'\. In December we were saddened to
learn of the passing of our beloved Ben
Holme, holder of the Detroit Conference
Cane. The Cane is to be held by the oldest
pastor of the Detroit Annual Conference
and/or its antecedent Conferences, who
has served 35 active years in the Con.terence, and is now a resident of the
Michigan Area.
Data from the General Board of Pensions confirmed the oldest member of the
Detroit Conference is Earnest 0 . Davis, 97
years old, who served seven years in the
Methodist Protestant Conference and 16
years in the Detroit Conference, so was not
eligible. The Commission on Archives and
History determined that the Rev. Myron R.
Everett met the qualifications and should
be the new Cane holder.
ON LEARNING of this honor, the
Everetts fe lt it would be appropriate for
Myron to receive the Cane in a church service. Pastor Gary Damon of the Howell
United Methodist Church, where the
Everetts belong, enthusiastically embraced this idea. He and his Church made fitting preparations. The date was set for
Sunday, Feb. 25.
Archivist Ron ald A. Brunger made the
presentation. First he held the Cane up to
the congregation and described its history.
The 1904 Detroit Annual Conferenc.e
had a strong historical sense. It had been
100 years since the first Methodist
preachers appeared in Michigan. At this
historic Conference the Conference Cane
was instituted. The main body of the cane
is made of wood from the First Methodist
Episcopal Church in Adrian, a fine brick
church completed in 1840, in which the
Detroit Conference was organized in 1856.
See CANE, page 14
The Detroit Conference Cane was presented to Myron R. Everett by Ronald Brunger
(I) during morning worship at Howell UMC Feb. 25. Mr. Everett and his wife, Esther,
are greeted here by Pastor Gary Damon.

CANE
The Cane has four small metal plates with
numerals; the No. 1 plate stands for the
main body of the Cane.
The No. 2 plate stands for an inset of
wood from the old log church on the River
nouge, the first Methodist church built in
Michigan. The No. 3 plate represents an
inset of wood from the bookcase of Seth
Reed, Michigan Methodism's centenarian
(1823-1924). The fourth inset of wood is
from a tree overlooking the grave of Barbara Heck on the banks of the St.
tawrence ·Rili'er· in· Canada·.·Barbara was
the fervent Methodist girl from Ireland, ~ho
in 1766 stirred up her cousin Philip Embury
to preach the first Methodist serm ons in
New York.
The Conference Cane has been held
through the years by some of the honored
men of the Conference. It went first in 1904
to Francis Asbury Blades, who as pastor
in Adrian at the close of the Civil War,
preached a funeral sermon for Lincoln . It
went in 1905 to Seth Reed who held it for
19 years! Seth Reed answered the roll call
of Conference for 79 consecutive years, a
record never to be surpassed . The Cane
has been held also by rank and file
ministers. One of these men preached
6,082 sermons and 896 funeral ·services,
and was responsible for more than 10,000
miscellaneous services.
The holders of the Conference Cane
have all been worthy, devoted shepherds,
faithful to their task, and worthy symbols
of our ministry. Myron Everritt is the 22nd
official Cane-holder.
ARCHIVIST BRUNGER then gave a
citation on the life and ministry of the prospective new Cane-holder.
Myron Robinson Everett was born Sept.
1, 1899, in Toledo, Ohio. He was recommended by the Silica Evangelical Church
to the 1921 Conference which met in
Sebewaing, and was given his local
preacher's license.
Myron attended North-C entra l Co llege
in Naperville, Ill., the church college of the
Evangelical Church , and th ere he received his B.A. degree. Pursuing his goal of
ministry, he went on to the Evangelical
Theological Seminary, also located in
Naperville, and achieved the B.D. degree.
He began an active ministry of 43 years
in the Michigan Conference of the
Evangelical Church (later the EvangelicalUnited Brethren Church) in 1925, when he
was appointed to the historic village of
White Pigeon and to Sturgis Mission. His
salary that first year was $460. And during that year on May 12, 1926, he married
Esther I. Bassett.
Through their long ministry, Myron and
Esther Everett served ten different
pastorates: 1925-26, White Pigeon and
from page 1
Sturgis Mission; 1926-30 Arden and Scottville; 1930-34, Niles; 1934-39, Benton Harbor First; 1939-41 , Grand Rapids First:
1941-47 Jackson : Greenwood Park ;
1947-48, Temperance in Pennsylvan ia;
1948-1955, Detroit Waterman; 1955-63
Pontiac: Baldwin Avenue; 1963-1968,
Detroit Bethany.
In 1958 when he still had ten years of
active ministry ahead, Myron summarized his ministry with these figures: sermons
preached 3,694; conversions 698; baptisms "4'64:.. \l.!edcting~ · '311 ; · futH:!r~IS""245;
members received into the church 561 .
And for the number of miles traveled, he
has written in quotation marks- "Plenty!"
FOR THE CEREMONY, Myron and
Esther were seated in the chancel. They
turned to face the TV screen on which appeared the face of Bishop Judith Craig ,
who gave a short, personal message to
the Everetts via a videotape.
In the abbreviated service that followed ,
pastor Gary Damon joined in paying his
tribute to the Everetts . His sermon
message was on "Ministry," and his words
tuned to the occasion .
Following the service, the Church gave
a reception in honor of the Everetts. Many
came up to examine the Cane with its
metal plates on which are inscribed many
names, including its 22nd holder, the Rev.
Myron R. Everett.

REVEREND MYRON EVERETT HONORED
Today, on the anniversary of
his giving his life to Jesus
Christ, Myron Everett is to
become the holder of the
Conference Cane for the Detroit Annual Conference. It
was on Sunday, February 25,
1918, that Myron responded to
the call of God. His l ife,
henceforth, has been lived as
a faithful servant of God.
Two representatives of th e Detroit Annua 1 Conference
Hi st orical Commission are here today to make this
pre sentation. Many of you have read articles by the
Reverend Ronald Brunger on the history of the early
church in this area. Mrs. Robinson is a child of the
parsonage and her father, during his ministry, was the
District Superintendent of the Ann Arbor District .
We are pleased to share this momen t wi th Myron and
Esther and rejoice in the ministry they have shared
over these many years. Myron ' s family is also present
today and you will have an opportunity to greet Myron,
Esther and the family in t he special coffee hour that
follows the 10:00 a.m . worship service .
Bishop Judith Craig has videot aped specia l words for
th i s occa s ion which will be shared during the presentation.
This ceremony is usually conducted during the Annual
Conference Session in June. We have a special privilege to be sharing in this momentous occasion.
The hymns used in the 10:00 a.m. worship service are
favor1tes of Myron : They speak volumes about Myron's
faith and his commitment to Jesus Christ.
LET US PRAISE GOD FOR THE LIFE AND MINISTRY OF THIS
MAN OF GOD!
