REV. JOHN EVERINGTON

(febl 1886-March 1965).

John Everig!tbn was born and r ai s e d in Lincoln, England.
He lived a few
blacks from the beautiful Cathedral. His mother died when he ,.,as only a b aby;
his father deorge did not remarry but had a "peppery" but very reli able housekee per to help rai s ed hi s family, as he hims elf ha d to \-lork long hours in those
days. She 1<ras called "Auntie Brown" and she was in her way ,very fond of John,
and corresponded with ~ohn and his daughter Alice after John s move to _America.
John had two older brother Cha rle s and George?, and a sister~Sarah(or ~ally).
Sally settled in Birmingham and was beloved by her niece Alice. Sally's favorite
son had died in Worl d war I. She was nervous and tense, a waiting news. Evidently
John and daughter Alice got back to England some time after the war. John would
liven Sally up by recalling memories of their childhood, and evidently did her
good.
John Everington moved to the States, and went first to Tennessee to hunt up
an uncle who had emigrated sometime earlier. John stayed with him for a time,
until he made some contacts and decisions for himsel f' . ".L"he Uncle lived in a
"Latt er Day Saints" area, nd J ohn was a Methodi s t. He went to Michigan where
he had a small pa "torate, s erving two small country churches, which allowed him time
to go to college a nd further his education.
In t h is area of Michigan he met Mildred Alice Preston. In due time they married. In 1913 they t ok the Gilead pastorate(out from Bronson or Coldwater). In
1915 he was sent, to White Pigeon. Their daughter Xlic.e._Elizabeth wa s baorn. Meanwhile the father s hea lth was not good. He had severe sinus trouble and \'la s medically advised to -seek a dr.jer climate than Michigan.

headquarters in Denver Colorado . and in the f a ll of 1917 left Hhite Pigeon and went
to an opening in New Mexico, at Ma xwell. While li •1 ing there Mrs. Everington took
very ill, and t her e wa s littl e goo d medi cal service in t hat a r ea. She wanted to
get ba ck to Michi gan. They took the train and got to Oklahoma City, where she had
to be taken to the hospi t a l f or em ergency c a r e , t d there she died. After the
funer a l in Michi gan , it wa s decided that littleAlice no1-1 2t torould be J:itidl. \'lith her.
gr a ndfather an aunt. After some months, at Chris t ma s ti me , the f ather arrived and
took her ba ck to "f•1ecky" .
Two year s late r John and the dau ghter went up into Colorado to a church
meeting , then on to vis it a relative(? ) George Par k er. They l ived in the country
near a college. .~.hey had th r·ee gro1·on children , Gretchen, a daugher Ruth(very shy)
a nd a s on. Jo hn and Alice returne d to New Mex i co. +he new ye r J ohn r eturned and
marri ed ~ut h . She was very musical. She was happy to g et away, and Alice needed
womanly attention. Aft er a time the:' moved to a happy location i n Colora do.

fo r \-rinterti me audiences from the nerthern states and Can a da, he served t •,;o more
Churches in C le •-·ar~ter and Dade City , a nd then he retire d to Zephy4 h ills, F lori da ,
v1here he died in 1965.
John and ··uth had one da u ghter, Mildred I•1a ry, who live s nea r Tampa . Alice
worked with her father and has made many of the films into enl arged p ictures for
exhi b its a nd smaller one s for g reeting cards , a ll hand-tinted t y her. She now has
t ro ub l e eetting pro per paper to •· ork on. She u s e d to travel with her father on
o ne t our, t hen stay home i th her c La r ds and makd a home for~.fi l dren while lt1om Ruth Nent
wit h him. I n time Alice E li ~ ~ bet b verin&ton mar ried Osca r Hett ema , and i n 1991
was living in 3174 S . San Marino ur., Harbour Heights , Fl 33983, happy to l earn
of new ~elatives.
