RS. MARY ELLEN BELL, wife of
Rev. Peter Bell, pas tor of the
Prescott charge on Saginaw Bay Dis trict s ince last conference, di ed on March
7, after eight n~onths of illness with a
heart ailment and seven week s in Saginaw ' General hospital.
Mary Ellen W a rren was born April 11,
1892, in Nutley, N.J., and grew up in
the Christian nurture of a Methodist
home. She was married to P eter Bell on
Nov. 29, 1917, shortly before he entered
serv ice in the first world war and after
his return they lived in Clifton, N.J.
For several years she shared with her
husband the experiences of the ministry,
including a seven-year Presbyterian
pastorate and thirteen years in radio
and outdoor evangelis m. In July, 1946,
they came to Michigan and took up the
work of the Prescott charge. During the
time of moving into the pars onage, Mrs .
Bell suffered a heart attack and . has o~ o.
been well since.
Besides her husband she leave:; twn
children, Clarence, a student in Wheatoa
College preparing for the m inis try, and
Irene, who left her training in Moody
Bible Institute to care for her mother,
and a brother, Frank Warren of Nutley,
N.J.
Funeral services were conducted in
Saginaw March 11 by District Superinten'd ent Frank M. Field, assisted by
Revs . Ethan Bray, Ross McLennan,
Lawrence Worth, T. W. H. Marshall and
Hugh Townley. Minister brothers Fred
Hart, A. A. Ziarko, E. C. Oliver, Ross
McLennan, Lawrence Worth, and A. S.
Coleman served as pall bearers and bore
the remains to Rose Lawn Memorial
Gardens cemetery in Saginaw.

Peter Bell

EV. P eter Bell, 64, pastor of Dryden
Methodis t Church, died October 7,
at Samaritan Hospital, Bay City, following surgery on October 5. He was born
in Passaic, N.J. After graduating from
Bloomfield College Seminary, Bloomfield, New J ersey, he with his father
founded the Allwood Community Church,
Clifton, and had a seven-year pastorate
in the Presbyterian Church of East
Paterson, N.J ., before coming to Michigan in 1946.
Upon becom ing a fu ll-time approved
s upply of the Detroit Conference, he has
served pastorates in Prescott, Rose City,
Brown City, Lex ington, Washington, and
Dryden. Fune ral services were held in
t he Dryden Church October 11, with
Bishop Mars hall R. Reed, officiating,
a ss isted by Rev. Arthur Smith, Port

Huron District s uperintendent, and Rev.
Ethan Bray, pastor of Gratiot Park,
Port Huron. Burial wa s in Saginaw.
Surviving are his wife, Mabelle, pastor of Eas t and Wes t Goodland churches·

Bell and Lyman E lder; two s istet·s, Mrs.
Loretta Zocc hi, of Passaic, a nd Mrs.
Ruth Thompson of Saginaw; five

Clifton , and Arthur of Hawthorne, N.J.
and Rev. J ohn Bell of Saginaw; six
g randchild ren and three great-grandchild t·en.

REV. MRS. MABELLE fmiL d1e8 unexpectedly June 23 at her home on Lakeshore Road, Applegate. Mrs. Bell served
Methodist churches in the Detroit Conference at Unionville, Brown City, Paint
Creek and retired from the Goodland
churches in 1964 after serving them seven
years. Her husband, Peter Bell, pre~ded her in death in 1959. He a lso was a
Methodist minister. Survivors include a
son, Lyman A. Elder, Southfield; a daughter, Mrs. Marion Highland, Fort Bragg,
Calif.; a stepson, Rev. Clarence Bell,
Clarkston; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Irene
Strietenbe1·ger, Bell Gardens, Calif.; one
sister, Mrs. William Morningstar, Largo,
Fla ; six grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Funeral services were held
June 26 in the Pomeroy Fune ral Home,
Croswell, with Rev. Wallace Zinnecker,
pastor of the Peck-Speaker United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in
Rpselawn Memorial Gardens, Saginaw.
