During his 35 years in the ministry,

Chelsea Man Presses o rf7/7b
Rev. Robert H. Benedict never served
as a " printer's devil" but he does have ink
in his blood .
With two small presses and 35 fonts of
type, the resident of Chelsea Methodist .
Retirement Home's Garden Apartments
prints everything from personalized station ary and commemorative napkins to
bookmarks and notices residents can
hang on their doors to discourage
persons from disturbing thc:n when
they' re napping .
He also prints greeting cards and
congratulatory notecards which are sent
out by the development office of the
United M ethodist Retirement Homes,
Rev. Robert Benedict
Inc.
At one t ime, Benedict says, he also
printed cards with words o f wisdom to be
placed in the Home's payroll envelopes .
Benedict began pursuin g his interest in
printing in the 1940s when a layman in
Grand Blanc gave him an old press. He
later acquired a second.
Currently his printing shop is housed at
one end of the Benedicts' bedroom but
Benedict plans to move his equipment to
a small shop he is building on his son's
property just outside of Chelsea.
In addition to printing, Benedict does
some editing. He has edited the Home's
newspaper, the Chelsea Reporter, since
Jan uary . He also is editing " The Washtenaw County Home Courier," a publication for residents of five nursing homes in
the county.
The 76-year-old retired in 1965 after 35
years in the ministry. He served 11 years
in Wyoming and the remainder in
Michi gan.
Benedict who was born on a farm in
Benzie County, moved to the Garden
Apartments two years ago.
The trim man is a prolific reader. Three
large bookcases in his apartment house
more than 500 books; they represent only
part of his collection .
Benedict says the vast majority of his
books are non-fiction .
" I've never given much time to fiction.
There's too much other materi al that
deals directl y with life," he says.
