ZINA BRADEN BENNETT, JR.
I was born August 27, 1924. Betty Lou Pickens and I were married January 24, 1971.
Our foster daughter and her husband George have 2 children, Jasson and Ursula.
During my youth, I missed a lot of school, being ill, and graduated from Southeastern High
in Detroit in 1944. I obtained my B.S. degree from Florida Southern College in Lakeland and
attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, for 2 years. I enlisted in the United States
Army for 3 years; 2-1/2 years was spent in Germany. My occupation was mail clerk. My other
work included Educational/Troop N.C.O. I then returned to Southern Methodist University under
the G.I. Bill and received my divinity degree.
My ministerial theme has been "The Good News" in the rural setting. Highlights of my
tasks: summer camp counselor (20+ yrs.), and 25+ years in Christian social concerns, and active
concern for racial justice and peace. SPECIAL NOTE: Work in non-partisan, Ontonagon County
peace groups against the Vietnam War, including a member of Vets Against Vietnam War.
I vividly remember my participation in closing down gambling (bingo) in Ontonagon
County. It was a pleasure to serve as delegate for the Upper Peninsula in the Prohibition Political
Party in '67-'68.
For 38 years , I have served several rural churches throughout the Detroit Annual
Conference, including 8 years at South Rockwood in Detroit West District. Betty Lou and I are
looking forward to a slower pace in retirement, but will continue in minist .
