lion spectators. Though exh austed at the finish line, I was
triumphant in the knowledge
that I had completed one of
the most demanding and-prestigious races in the world.
I wore a United Methodist
T-Shirt with · the verse fro m
Hebrews 12 :1 imp rinted on
the b ack, " Sur rounded by so
great a cloud of witnesses .. .let
u s r un with p erseveran ce the
race th at is set b efore us."
Members of the F lat Rock
UMC had penned p ersonal
words of encouragement. The
T-Shir t enabled the crowd to
Q~sonalize their p roddin ,
"Go for it United Methodtst. ..don't give up ... you can do
·it .. .you're almost there United
Methodist." I dared not stop
lest I become a disappointing
representative of our denomination.
The Boston Marathon was a
powerful metaphor of the moreimportant race of Christian
discipleship. The challenge of
discipleship is expressed in
Philippians 3: 14, "I press ' on
toward the goal for the prize of
the heavenly call of God in
Christ
Jesus."
Running
through the crowds at Boston
gave me a glimpse of the road
leading to Zion lined with a
great cloud of witnesses.
One of the most influential·
witnesses to my discipleship
race has been Phil Miles. Rev.
Miles was pastor during my
difficult high school days. He
encouraged me to focus my
dispersed energy for God's
purpose . At my ordination 15
years ago Phil wa~ there to welcome me into the Detroit
Annual Conference as a col-_
league. He called or visited me
every few weeks to speak a
word of encouragement. And
at a time when I w anted to
quit, he urged me to keep
going.
Three years ago I grieved
the loss·of this beloved mentor
to a well fought battle with
cancer. I celebrated his fine
finish when the words of scripture were read at his funeral: "I
h ave finished the race, I have
kept the faith. From now -on
there is reserved for m e the
crown of righteousness which
the Lord, the righteous judge,
will give me on that day, and
not only to me but also to all
who h ave longed fo r his
appearing." (2 Timothy 4:8)
During each Annual Conference I am surprised at how
strongly I continue to sense
P hil Miles' encouragement
during worship services. Every
year Annu al C onference is a
mile marker at which I still
hear Phil's voice, "Keep going
United Methodist, the prize is
just ahead!"
