Statement to Annual Conference
It's not that I have gone through the diaconal ministry program ... the program
has gone through me. And this new light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.

).

Thanks to the 1996 General
Conference, histor y was made
in the Detroit Annual Conference Wednesday, June 4.
Gathering in Dawson Auditorium on the campus of Adrian College, five women were
ordained deacons in full conn ection - the first such ordinations ever.
Paragraph 31 9 describes the
ministry of a deacon in full
connection. "Deacons lead the
congregation in its servant
ministry and equip and support all baptized Christians in
their ministry. In the world, the
deacon seeks to express a ministry of compassion and justice. In the congregation, the
ministry of the deacon is to
teach and to form disciples,
and to lead worship together
with other ordained and
laypersons."
This year's first group of
deacons in full connection all
come from previous consecration as diaconal ministers. The
same 1996 G ene ral Conference did away with diaconal
ministry, though some people
continue on that track, having
started years earlier.
The Advocate talked with
two of the five new deacons in
full connection, to ask them
what it meant for their lives
and tl].eir ministry.
"Being named in ordination
by the church is powerful and
formative," said the Rev. Judy
Mayo, serving the Livonia:
Newburg UMC. "Deacon is a
powerful name. There is a
chemistry happening with this
new order. We don't know how
it is all going to play out. The
order of deacon seems to be
part of something much bigger
- making the church ready for

a n ew century and empowering the laity in new ways."
The Rev. Terry Gladstone

"Consecration
was a validation of
an inner call. (Ordi~
nation) is responding to the church's
need."
- Terry

Gladston~

serves as associate council
director in the D etroit Conference. " It was extra special to be
ordained in this church family," she said, "becau se this con-

ference feels like home. I
looked at the stage and saw all
the p eople I love and respect
up there.
"The difference between
this and my consecration is the
sense that this is a call from the
church needing deacons. Consecration was a validation of an
inner call. This is responding to
the church's need . It was not
like, " Oh, please, do this for
me." The church needs p eople
to connect to the world.
"We already have deacons
and they just d on't know it.
The new order of deacons can
lead laity into their ministries
t
in the world."
