AD RIAN (M CA)-As usual, those
who miss the final words of the retirees
and spouses miss a key part of
conference (see picture, page 4).
Friday afternoon, June 4, conference
honored people who had shared 574
years of their lives in active serv ice as
mini sters in the Detroit Con ference.
Th ey shared wisdom and affect ion , as
some of the sample quotes illust rate :
"We are not retidng, we are relocating." The cha irman of my Ad. Board
asked : "Do you have anything to say?
"WHOOPEE!" (Porteous)
"I'll make those next forty years , as
lo ng as I keep breathing!" (Compton)
"A s with my own mortali ty and
accep ting death, I'm no t certa in I accept
re tirement. " "Our five children share
wha t a grea t thing i t was to gro w up in a
parsonage, surrounded by love and
Christian values." (Beynons)
"If you can 't do anyfhmg else, just
love all your people and they'll love you
back. " "I too have an appointment with
Spring. Thanks for all that has been,
and thanks for all that is to be." (Grays)
"I had not yet understood the
difference between the call of God or
that of a district superintendent!"
(Lewis)
"I hate to leave the church. They say
wonderful things about me now, but I
wish they had said them while I was
working!" (M aitland)
"It's frustrating to try to evaluate a 40
year ministry. We are stewards of
mysteries and miracles." (White)
You may want to buy a tape of the
speeches and/or plan to be present
next year and not miss one of the
highlights of conference.
