O BITU A RY
Rev ,Jobn Michae l Bittner ,son of John and Mary Bittner,was born
March 16,1856 a t Adri an,hlichigan and died a t t~e Hi ghland Park
Hospital from the effects of a n acidenta l ·fall at his home on
Linwood Ave.,Detroit, Michigan, Nov.22,1935; aged 79 years,8 months
and six days.
~ fuen a small boy his parents moved on a f arm KHKr a t South Whiteford,
Michigan, where he gxKK a ttended school a nd grew to y oung manhood.
He was converted at the age of thirteen and united with the Evangelical
Church which ~ ·oved· and served practically a ll his life. \Jhen a
young man he went to Texas for a short time, then returned and entered
the Seminary at Na perville ,Ill.,but po or hea l th cut his training
short. He went to Conference in 1886 and wa s licensed to preach but
did not receive work. During the fall of that year Rev.G.A.Rettler,
Presiding Elder,sent him to a ssist Rev.W.A . Koehler on the NashvilleMaple Grove charge. At the next conference session he was app ointed
~~as a ssista nt pastor with Rev .George Johnson at Petoskey. He SBXXBM was
~~ordained DeaconAin 18 8~ and Elder in 189/. He served in the a ctive
~ministry t wenty three y ea rs. He s erved a ~ etoskey two years,Trave rse
City three,Le Roy one,Flint one,Sebewaing two,Cass City one,then he
was in the h~ rdwa re business a t Sebewaing two years,and was then
sent to Verona one year, Ca ledonia two,Bay City two,Lenox two,South
Rockwoqd two,Columbiaville three, and Owendale six months.
On April 11,1888 he was married to Elizabeth Doerr by a United
Brethren minister a t the home of Mr. a nd Mrs.J. M.Nyce in £etoskey.
This union was blessed with t wo da ughters, Ester Mae and Ruth Naomi.
In 1911 he located at Case City where the family lived five years.
In 1916 they moved to Detroit and established their home a t 5278
Linwood Ave. He was a very energetic a nd a ctive man. He was a hard
and effective worker on his fields of l abor and while in retirement
a t Detroit he found much to do a bout the home and f or other people.
For a time he had employment with the Weidman Manufactoring Co.~
and was care t a ker of the Grand River Ave. Evangelical church about
five yea rs. He was a l way s gl ad to assist other people esp ecially if
they were in sickness or trouble. During the long illness of Rev .
J .A.F~e a nd Rev.J .J . Schuknecht he broug~t much c'omfort a nd help.
Rev.Bittner was a very quiet,reserved,unobtrusive man. He was humble,
never self-a ssertive~or forward or medlesome. Re sought only a
humble place and way of serving and glorifying his Lord. He was the
soul of loyalty to Christ a nd his churoh,alway s faithful and ready
to do his best. Church membership vows,promises,duties and privileges
were sa cred to him. He could not viola te them or neglect them. Kl
He was very sincere in his ministry, a good preacher who stressed the
fundamentals of the Gospel,and foyal to his pastoral duties. He
held a number of l arge revivals otably one a t Sebewa ing with the
a ssistance of Rev.E.M .Renner. H left his fields in good condition.
He was 'always glad to see a good work going on anywhere. He attended
many union servioes,conventions,oamp me etings ,confe rences,t&berna ole
meetings and revi vals. At the recent revival in his own church this
month he attended eve~ service . He was a l way s in his place Sunday
morning and evening and a t the mid-week prayer meeting,though he had
seven miles to go and nearly a mile to wal k after leaving the street
oar. In t his he was an exampl e and inspiration that will not soon be
forgotten. He supported the cause of Christ,he being a believer in
the principle of tithing. Ht, prayers a nd testimonies were always
earnest,olear and inspiring. He will be greatly missed by many.

He leaves his wife, Eliza beth;two da ughters, Es t her Mae Lloyd and
Ruth Na omi Ha yes both of Detroit; two si ~ters Mrs. Ma7,Y Frye of
Detroit a nd Mrs. Lydia Billa u of So.~c~~ ;one brother,Mose Bittner
of Sylvania,Ohio;four nephews a nd many otfier rela tives and friends.
One brother,Frank,preceeded him in dea th.
