OBITUARY
Chandler S.Brown, well known in ministerial circles has
p a ssed away.
Chandler S . Brown has gone to h is eternal reward .He
is de ad a nd yet he lives . The place that knew him once
k nows him no more; and yet h e has established a memory in
the hearts of his people among whom he lived and labored
that wi l l a lways be cheri s hed.He lived for an exalted
purpose . He made the most of his oportunit ies.His way s
through life are punctuated by deeds of k i ndness and love,
and when deat h over took him he was greeted with the applause
of heaven and the eulogy of his God , who ext ended the welcome

well done,thou good and faithfu l servant, 11 e ct.
Brother Brown was born June 6th,l836, at Compton,
One ida County t . Y. . ,and di ed s udden l y at his h ome Thu r sday
a fternoon, April 28 , 1904 a t the age of 67 years,lO months
and 3 days . He was a son of Smith a nd Liorette (Lauretta)
Brown , who hav e preceeded him to the land of eternal rest.
While yet a young man he came to Michigan and
settl ed i n this loc a lity,where . he commenced to make a home
for himsel f. In the year 1858 he was married to El i zabet h
: cosser,who is now left to mourn the departure of the
compan ion of her youth,a ki nd husband and father,who was
ever sol icitous for the welfare of his family.
This union was ble s sed with t wo children,Al bert and
Anna , who with therr aged mother fee l their loss keenly ,
but who mourn not as those who have no hop e . There is a
better da y commi ng when a ll the ties that have been broken
on ear th shal l be unit ed by a gl or i ous immortal ity in the
wor l d to come .
Asid e from the i mmed i ate family Brother Br own has
l eft t hree bro ther s and one s ister , namely; Lor en c. of
~u incy; M. Hiram,of Fremont Ind . Harv ey ,of Wakashma , and
Clarcy,(Mrs. Ca lvin Steffey)of East Gil ead Mich . There are
also fo ur grandchil dr e n ,t wo daughters of t he ir so n ,~lb ert ,
and two s ons of the ir daughter, Anna,
Of the deceased early christian l if e we know very
litt l e . It i s stated that at t he a ge of 17, whil e on his
way home from a prayermeeting he was gloriousl y saved.
His a c ceptance with God was a l ways an und isputabl e fact
in his religious l ife . He never doubted nature 's l aws aad
done much for him,but the grace of God rounded out hi s life
in such a way that i t c an be sai d,he was perfe ct in nature ,
and perfect in love,making an all round ed christian cha r acter

The wrighter first learned to know him t went y-e i ght year s
a go at th e conferenc e s ession h el d at Ionia Mich. Brother
Brown was then in the prime of life. Th e first gl ance at
himc onvinced the wr~ter h e was in the presence of a man .
His commanding presence , his kind and gentlemanly
demeanor , his well bal anced t emper i mpressed themselves
upo n a ll who had the pleasure of meet i ng him , and one co uld
not hel p but remark, '' 1'h ere goes a christian gentl eman."
Br other Brown had the d i sti nction of being one of our
charter members of th e r.: ici_ l gan Conference . He was t he
youngest of five or seven minister s who unfurled the
Evang elical banner over this state of Michigan . He and his

c ompanion belonr:- to that her oic band of pioneer preachers
and preacher s 'wives who s a crificed much for the good of
the chur ch,and the sal vat i on of soul s .
Accordi ng to Brot h er Brown ' s personal record his
mini stry extenden over a period of a l most twenty-five
years ,serving as pastor on the following charges ~ I n 186566 on ~ u l t on circuit,with J.Borough and J . Pauli n as his
coll eagues; in 1867-68 St . Joseph circuit ,wit:h Geo . Doll
and E . B . Miller for colleagues ; in 1869-70 Colo n circu i t,
with J .Ro s h a s colleague; in 1871 Fremont circuit,D . c.
Roland colleagu e ; 1872 Col on cir cu it; 1873-6 ~onroe cir cuit
1876-79 Fr emont circuit; 18b2 , Litchfield miss io n ; 1883,
appointed on West Unity c i rcuit,but on account of fai ling
health he d i d not s erve the work,instead he served Fremont
charg e from December the s ame y ear until the fol l ownng
conference; in 1884-87 Park cir cuit , 1887 - 89 Fulton ci rcu i t ,
at the close of this pastorate Brother Brown's l abors as
an itinerant preacher closed on account of failing eyesigh t .
He then settled down on the homestead to enjoy the
blessing s of a life well spent. However ,these d ays of
qmietude were continually interr upted by phys ic a l ailments
In later yea rs he he became conscious that his da ys were
numbered . Amid st the hallowed influenc e s of a well ordered
house , v er y u nexpect edly to his family the summons came
from the court of heaven to t his servant to come up higher .
He was rea dy . He di ed as he liv e d, ~n a quiet way . He is
no w with his f r i e nds and br e thr en who have gone on before .
~ay God in his infinite me rc y comfort his fami l y and finally
hous e t h em all in that home above.
The funeral was held yesterday.
