DATE OF DEATH.__________________________ PLACE·------------------------PLACE OF BURI AL·--------------------------·----------------------------
BIOG RAPHY: I grew up on a farm just outside
of St. Louis, Michigan whe re I graduated from
high school i n 1935, the depressio n stil l very
much in evidence. At th is time I considered
v<Hious ca reer possibi lities, including the
ministry. As I could not see how the years of
education could be achieved my college career
ended after one semester.
The next severa l years were occupied in working at home on the farm, in the automobi le facto ries, and in the local sugar factory. Also one
summer was spen t hitch-hiking and hoboing
through the wes~d working in orchards.
In 1940 I marri ed Doris Conner, w hom I met
at Alma College, and during the ea rly forties I
worked in factories that were involved in war production for WW II so was not drafted
until 194S. After comple ting basic training I served in the Army of Occupation in Germany un til discharged in 1946. It was after this that I worked in construction with
various contractors and became a journeyman ca rpen ter.
During these yea rs following WW II I became very active in the Church and began
to feel something of a ca ll to the ministry. In 1952 (I was almost 35 yea rs old, married
12 years, and had three ch ildren) that I was appointed to serve a small Methodist church
near home. During the next several years I served other small churches in w hat is
now ca lled the West Michigan Conference as a part-time supply pastor whi le work~ ing at construction wo~ Then in 1960 I began serving in the Detroit Conference,
/<fnathe next year began serving full-time with appointment to H il lman, th ere were
'Q . nJnow four children.
r
t40
,J6 ~_Fu ll-time service meant that regular progress must be made in the course of study;
'1 ~ - ordina tion as local elder followed in 1966. Then, after the merger with the E.U.B.
(Y
Church came the opportunity to become an Associate Member of Conference if I would
take co llege courses to taling at least 12 hours cred its. I am grateful for the encouragemen t o f some members o f the Board o f M inistry at that ti me.
As I look back at my career as a pastor, always in sma ll churches in small rura l towns,
I feel that I was very fo rtunate in the opportuni ties tha t came to me along the way.
Both the opportunities to serve, and the opportunities to get additional training that
I might be able to serve better. I was able to attend both the Northwes tern School
of Alcohol Studies and a seminar for pastors at the Georgian Cl inic in Atlanta, Georgia;
and a trai ning program for pastors at Harper Hospita l, Detro it, on ministering to the
critica lly ill. I also have often felt thankfu l for a background of varied occupation~ and
experiences w hich many times helped me to understand a little better some of the
problems of those in the churches that I served.
It was ofteri my privilege to be a part of the loca l fire department and th e ambulance
service in these communities and be with the people during their physical traumas
as well as the spiri tua l. I hope that I used my time and my training w"'ll.
It was in 1979, two years after heart surgery, wh ile my cardiologist was giving me
a check-up, that he told me that I should get out of the ministry, th e tension was taking its tol l. So since conference time 1980 I have been on disability leave, now it
must be retirement.
The chu rch has been good to me these thirty three yea rs. Yes, it has given mc problems, head aches, and heart aches, but it ha s also given me strength that I did not
otherwise have, and I have received so much for whi ch I praise God!
Donald W. Brown
TESTIMONIAL: There are fewer persons who have a better outl ook on life than Don
Brown. I ha ve always enjoyed hi s keen sense of humor and warm personality. A few
years back Don underwent extensive surgpry bu t ca me th rough wit h flying colors.
Just recently we had opportunity to have lunch with Don and Doris Brown in a
neighbor~ng village, then went over to see their retiremen t home near Petoskey. The~
seemed like two very happy persons, very much in tune with life and an excellent
outlook on l ife.
I fi rst _came to know £?on through the Vocati onal Intern Program section of Career
Pl;:uu1 111g .1 11 ~ Cour_1seling . For severa l yea r~ we worked together on th is committee.
One of t l~e f111 e th1ngs Don d id for the committee was to arrange a set of slides for
presentation to Chu1ches concern ing the Vocational Intern Program.
Don has served_ as pastor in several churches. Now w ith retirement at hand they will
surely enJoy the1r lovely home together. I pr.1y Gotl's richest biPssings upon them both.
