Tom Brown II

I

remember my relig ious life beginn ing while bei ng treated at
age fi ve, fo r possible tuberculosis. \,Ve sang songs anJ
prayed. After a few months there, 1 he lped lead a few songs
and prayers.
My mother came to see me eve ry othe r week afte r she visited
my Dad, To m Brown, in the Veterans Hospital in Oh io. 1 was
born A ugust 21, 1934 in C hicago. My Dad went to the hospi,
ta l with TB in 1940. M om moved us to h er fam ily farm with
my younger brother Jerry.

When 1 was a lmost 11, Mom took us to Immanue l Methodist
in East Detroit, a caring and exc iting church ho me fu ll of lov ing people and
pastors. Churches, camps, youth fe llowship, good schools and neighbo rs were
our supports when Dad d ied just before 1 turned 12.
I met Patricia Lo uise Sandford at A lbion College. We married on A ugust 27,
1955. I attended Boston Univers ity School of Theology and began my first pas,
to rate in Malden, MA in 195 7. There our first son , Steve n Pau l, was born.
My first appointment upon returning to Michigan was at Dearborn First. A
"Book of Acts" startup of S t. C lair Sho res Good Shepherd from 40 n ames o n a
list to an active , well, housed congregation in just five years was a thrill, and it
was h ard to leave o ur "baby." But we had two new o nes of our own with Peter
M ark and Mary Elizabeth; inner,c ity struggles and mu lti, cultural triumphs in
River Rouge Epwo rth and a bond ing with a community in memoria l to Dr.
Martin Luther King,] r.
Fresh air and the grand, g lo rious variety of m inistries at Iron Mountain Trinity
saw Confirmatio n classes of 25 +, Ski ch aplaincy and ecumenical youth ch o ir
which S teve e nj oyed. Renewal and rebuilding kept us busy at Rosevi lle when
th e X,way took the ir church ho me. At the new site new ministries developed ,
but we faced problems of declining support of sch ools as Steve and then Peter
graduated and started A lbion College.
New sch ool opportunities opened for Mary at H emlock,Ne lson wh ere we had
teamwork and Mary off to A lbion , too! A n " interim" effort at Warren Wesley.
The n to Flint's Oak Park, putting all my years of expe rience to their best in
trying to reconnect the local church to th e ir community. We h ad the grandest
musical setting and also the marvelo us mission work of Dort,Oak Park
Ne ighborhood Ho use. And finally to Burton : Emmanuel and a fu ll circle of
min istry, in church, home and community, where work with the Greater Flint
Counc il of Churches and Human Relatio ns was blessed.
All was possible with the love and creativity of my dear wife, Pat, who led in
h o me, church and community through Church W o men United, Big S isters,
Conference Equitable Sa laries , M ichigan Ecumenica l Forum, and ke pt the
music go ing through Midland Choral and M adrigal C ho rale, eve n giv ing
lessons to singe rs, including me. Now we'll be retu rning to Albion, w play
house and enjoy all o ur fam ily and welcome friends.
