-oRobert Bryce was born in Lynn Township, st.
Clair County, Michigan, March 9, 1889..
In his fifth
year his family moved into the woods west of Pinconning where he was reared.
He attended the Pincon-
ning high school and the County Normal at Standish,
after which he taught school for three years.
He was converted in Crusader meetings held in
the Baptist Church in Brown City when he was seventeen years of age.
After teaching he, not having had a full high
school course, spent five years in Albion College.
In the autumn of 1916, District Superintendent
John Dystant appointed him to Riggsville, Mullet Lake
and Topinabee.
This was a twenty-two mile circuit
which he walked until the roads became impassable,
after which he walked fourteen miles.

He received
During this year the
Methodist Church of Topinabee was built and dedicated
without indebtedness.
The next year he was invited and was appointed
to Millersburg.

The next autumn he was appointed

to Rogers City.
Having completed the conference
course of study, he was ordained Elder in Madison
Avenue Methodist Church, Bay City, in 1920, and
appointed to Harrisville.
From 1922 to 1927, he served two pastorates in
the Presbyterian denomination, Mackinaw City and
Alpena.
In May 1927, he was appointed by Bishop Nicholson to the Akron, Fairgrove and Bethel Methodist
churches.
In 1930, he was appointed to Clio

Kearsley and Crace churches in Flint.
In the
conference of 1940 he was appointed to First Church,
Pontiac.
While at Millersburg he was married to Marie
Parkinson to which union three sons were born: Robe r.t
at Rogers City on Lake Huron; David at Harrisville
on Lake Huron; and Lawrence at Alpena on Lake Huron.

rendered to that church and community.
The couple had s erved the churches at
Deerfield and Peters burg before their
retirement in 1957. During an informal
program, following a potluck dinner at
1 p.m., Mr. Bryce was pres ented with a
fra med plaque which read: " In r ecog nition of seven fa it hful year s of service
as pas tor and t he f our and one-half
yea t·s of con tinued in teres t in the Deerf ield Methodist Church, the offi cial
board has gone on record as voting

board m ember. Mr. Bryce's sister and
hus band fro m Flint were surprise guests
a s well a s hi s brother and family from
Pinconning.

ROBERT BRYCE, 84, of the De-
1 {f"ti( .ceOnference, died June 26 at the
Chelsea United Methodist Home where he
had been a resident for two and a half
years. He had been in failing health for
the past six months. Born March 4, 1888,
in Yale, he married Marie Tarkinson on
January 1, 1917. Pastorates served by Mr.
Bryce included Riggsville, Millersburg,
Rogers City, Harrisville, Akron, Clio, Flint
Grace and Kearsley, Pontiac First, Detroit Bethlehem and St. Luke's, Grass
Lake, and Deerfield where he retired in
1957. He was a member of the Deerfield
church and an honorary member of the
Petersburg Kiwanis Club. He was pre-deceased by his wife in 1967. Surviving are
three sons, Lawrence of Deerfield, Robert
of Gaylord, and David of Greenfield, S.C.,
nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; eight great-stepgrandchildren ; and
one brother, John of Pinconning. Funeral
services were held June 29 at the Home
chapel with Rev. Richard Clemans officiating. Burial was in the Deerfield Cemetery.
