FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PLEASE
Rev. Harry M. Brakeman, Minister of the Washington Davis United
Methodist Church, Washington, Michigan was elected to Associate Membership in the Detroit Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church on
Wednesday, June 1, 1972 , as the 13lst consecutive session of the
conference began in Dawson Auditorium, on the campus of Adrian College,
Adrian, Michigan.
Rev. Brakeman was graduated from Port Huron High School, Port Huron,
Michigan in 1940; worked for the U.S. Post Office Department until 1962
as a rural mail carrier. At the same time he attended Macomb County
Community College and Michigan State University.
He completed a Lay Pastor
course at Garrett Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois in 1964.
Rev. Brakeman was recommended for a license to preach by the
North Street United Methodist Church, North Street, Michigan in 1956;
ordained a Deacon in 1963 and an Elder in 1965.
He is married and the father of three children.
He serves on the
Community Boy Scout Committee.

ELLA BRAKEMAN were
honored by family and friends
at . the Crystal Gardens in
Marysville. The occasion was
the couple's 50th wedding '
anniversary. Rev. Brakeman
and Ella Louise Ryder were
married Aug. 20, 1948, by the
Rev. Harold Parker in Fargo
Methodist Church. Their children and spouses are Gil and
Donna Brakeman of Lansing,
Vonda and Alf Le Sauvage of
Sarnia and Nadine and Ron
Porter of Louisville, Ky. They
have four grandchildren,
Bethany, Carla and Shawna Le
Sauvage and Will Brakeman.
They have served as a pastor
couple for 41 years and as missionaries to Haiti since 1976. A
school of 900 students in Haiti
is named after them.

Algonac, in honor of their 35th wed ding
anniversary. Rev. Brakeman and Ella
Ryder were married August 20, 1948, in
Fargo, MI. Mary Esau Schindler, North
Street, and Harlan Ryder, Brown City,
were attendants . Rev. and Mrs. Brakeman have two daughters; Mrs. Alfred
(Vonda) Le Sauvage, Sarnia, Ontario,
Canada, and Mrs. William (Rev.) Nadine
Smith, Algonac; one son, Gilbert,
Harry and Ella Brakeman
· Lansing; six grandchildren. Mrs. Brakeman was born in Port Huron and raised
around Yale. Rev. Brakeman was born
in Port Huron , was rural mail carrier for
many years at North Street. They have
served many churches in the Port Huron
area; Milia Memorial; Zion, Jeddo,
Buel; Davis, Washington; Deckerville,
Minden City; Ogden UMC, Blissfield,
they have now served for six years. Rev .
Brakeman and Ella have been to Haiti
on work crews for seven years and have
led work teams the past three years for
the Ann Arbor District.

• Senior geology
major, Gilbert Brakeman, son of Rev. and Mrs. Harry M. Brakeman of Washington, will graduate from
Adrian College June 6. He has held a
scholarship for the four years and has
been named to the Dean's list which means
a student must have a 3.25 average on a
four-point scale.
Gilbert attended Washington Junior
High in Port Huron and graduated from
Croswell-Lexington High School. His
father was pastor of Port Huron Mills
Memorial for seven years and the JeddoBuel Charge for five. His sister, Venda,
will graduate from Macomb Community
College in June and finish her work at
Western University. She also was· a
graduate of the Croswell-Lexington High
School.

Ella Louise Brakeman, 85, of Clyde Township, went
home to be with her Lord on Friday, May 3 1, 2013.
She was born July 30, 1927 in Yale to the late Almon
and Myrtle Ryder. She married Harry M. Brakeman on
August 20, 1948 in Fargo, Michigan.
Mrs. Brakeman attended the Chicago Evangelistic
Institute and was a faithful pastor's wife and missionary for
the United Methodist Church for 64 years. She was a
member of First United Methodist Church and the United
Methodist Women. Since 1976, Ella and Harry both
traveled extensively to Haiti helping to establish 18 schools
and churches as well as the Brakeman College which now
has an enrollment of900.
She is survived by her husband, Reverend Harry
Brakeman; three children, Gilbert (Donna) Brakeman,
Yonda LeSauvage and Nadine (Ron) Porter; four
grandchildren, Bethany (Mike) Walters, Carla (Len) Dyke,
Shawna (Chris) Hurst and Will (Lovina) Gayowski; four
great-grandchildren, Austin, Morgan, Brooklyn and
Rhonin; a brother, Harlan Ryder; and several nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Beatrice
(Denver) Lossing and sister-in-law, June Ryder.
A Memorial Service was held at II :00 a.m. Saturday,
June 8, 2013 in First United Methodist Church. The
Reverend William Wright officiated.
Burial was in Kinney Cemetery.
