RETIRED BISHOP CHARLES W.
BRASHARES, 91, died in Evanston, Ill.,
June 23 after severa l weeks of failing health.
A native of Williamsport, Ohio, Bishop
Brashares was elected to the episcopacy of
t he Methodist C hurch in 1944 after ten years
as pastor of First Methodist Church in Ann
Arbor, Mich. , and d irector of the Wesley
Foundation a t the University of Michigan.
He served fo r eight years as episcopal leader
of Iowa, and then 12 years in Chicago before
retiring in 1964. After graduate study at both
Boston and Harvard University, he was
ordai ned an elder in the Methodist C hurch in
191 8 a nd held pastora tes in Massa chusetts,
Maine and Ohio before his appointment to
the Ann A rbor church. H e had made his
home in Evanston, Ill ., fo r a number of years
and was active in First United Methodist
Church. Mrs. Brashares died in 1974.
Survivors include three sons, 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A
memorial service was held June 30 at First
United Methodist Church in Evanston, Ill.
Burial was in Ann Arbor.

MRS. JULIA BRASHARES of Evanston, Ill .,
formerly of Ann Arbor , wife of Bishop Wes l ey ~
Brashares , died October 16. The body was
cremated and memorial services were held ~­
October 23 in th e Georg ian Reti remen t Home
chapel, Evanston. Interm ent was October 24
in the Forest Hills Cemetery, Ann Arb or. She ~
was 82. A native of Ness City, Kan., she and
Bishop Brashares were married Dec. 20, 1916.
He retired in 1964 after serving eight years in
the Iowa Area and 12 in the Chicago Area.
They have lived in th e Georgian retirement
home for the past several years. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Charles M. of
Cleveland, Ohio, Rev. Wesley E. of Plymouth ,
Ind. , and Rev . Robert M . of LaHabre. Calif.:
11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren .
