Dear Brother i n Christ : Please f ind enclosed filled blank
·asking for Ministerial Hi s torical data . I have f ound it next to
i mpos s ible to give atte ntion to your r eques t fo r t h is information
until the last few days . The effort it takes t o lce e p body and
soul t oge the r in this economicallY bankrupt a nd drough stricken
area draws so heavily on one's phys ical and mental re s erves tha t
not much else than absolute es se ntials can be de a lt with. Ple ase

Yes , we know what it is to live i n the ' d esert'. This part
of t he c ount ry has been suffering fo r the past six years with an
intens ifying decre ase of moisture. All avai l able water reserves
were exhausted before this year's torrid, scorching , blighting
heat and parching Wi!1dS came upon us. The ±'hopeful farrr1er" plante d with high expectation but is reaping in utter despair. Field
nor garde n nas pr oduced a morsel for ma n or beast. No one is exempt fr 01n the resultant suffering . Not only have ' the c r ops been
a compl ete fail ure, but where there i s a s hri~eled stalk standing
its invita tion to a starving bea st is 6ertain death - from prussic
acid, Hundreds of head of s t oek are lost daily from t his poison.
Without auman provisions - neither food or fuel or clothing - or
feed for l ive-stock t he f uture is dismal. All provi s i ons must be
i mpor t ed . Whi ch means ·t hat the cos t of living is prohibitive.
Those · who are doing the im porting of provisions certainly have
little e1se in mind than t hat of personal profits. ' The cost to
t he consumer, if c ontinue d but a short time, Will ensnare h i m in
t he "legal trap" of tne merciless creditor. By no a ct of any known
method of computation Will it be possible for any one to keep suffi·cient stock thru the winter to provide for t he ,absol ute necessities of t he fa~ ily . This drough is puttibg the ~ 'strangle ; hb ld '
upon this poor delus i oned _people who were a1r:eady caug ht in the
deadly f oils of a venomous economic system,

From the viewpoint of
a mi nister serving a mission field
.
in the Nebr . Conference t he above picture has many other darksome
f eatures added t o it. You may be more or 1e s.s fami liar wi t h the
financial status of thj_s Conf. But when we und ertake to impress
upon you the fact tha.t t hi s Conf. has enacted l eg islation whi ch
t hrows i t s entire 'f i nancial liability upon the man who i s l east
able' to be a r 1 t, namely , the minis t er who i s serving a field that
cannot begin to support him e ven i'n normal times - the Conf. missionary •. With a pre sent liability of $ 138 , 000, t h e interest of
which cannot be met, not s'a ying a nythi ng about touching the prinpal, is a proposi ti'on thrus t u pon the most innocent and most helpless which we can fi n d no Chr i s tian jus tification for at all.
The f ina n c i al me thod u sea. is s i mply t h l s : "Tha t a11 monie s

Conf . are traine d to l ~ok upon t he · 'home mi ssion' enterpri ze , for
which the · Conf . Mi ss ionary Society of tnis Conf . was organized, as
t he mos t sacred object to wh ich they mi ght contribute . But since
feeling the impact of · tne di ss i t)ation · of their sacrlfibi a l g ifti3 ,
i n the face of the dire circums tances whara their own pastor - a
Conf . nissionary - is bare ly existing , they delibe ra t e.~y refuse
t o support this treasury as it now functions . More than that , ~t
i s c reating a sordid non-respons iveness to every moral appeal.
Furthermore , the 11 equity feature 11 of tne General HiSSionary
Treauury funds , appropriated to tnis, · a nd other Confere nces too,
i s derailed fr om i ts intended purpos e , g oing , in tais Conf ., to

you see , that it i s as obvi oas us the ni~ht fo llowing tr1e day what.

think, tnat there are t nirty ei6t1t of the · sixty some f'ielci.s of this

Conf. IURRionary Treasury , which now have tne ' doubl e deal': de ves t a. t ing drough and Qerciless ci.iscrimination to bear .
We are not reges t e r i ng personal compl a i n ts here , for we be li eve t hat a legal debt is a moral r espon s i b i lity . But when the

strikes us most forcib l y with a stinging sence of injustice. And

· concl ude t hat we must seek some livabl e oasis e lsewhere ,- and that

Neve r.
But the very force·of circ ums t ances , over which we have no control,
is dri~ing ~ua > to make a decisio~ in the all-t o e -naar _ £otur~ , Which
may a l le v iat e much pendi ng diH t ress anu critical, i f not fatal, l oss~
It is neces11ary t na t we give immedi ate attention to the pre c arious
condition of Mrs. Brookens ' parents, who are c augn t in the grip of
this te rrible drough, and that without bei n~ able to assist themse l ves , due to old a ge ~nd im pa i red ~ he~ltb • . The n we plan · to spend

Meanwhi l e, we aim to give ourse lves to v oluntary ministeria l
service as opportunity -offers itself. And whether within the
bounds of t his Conf., or the ·Michi gan Conf., we Wi ll do our best ,
within our very limited means, to serve in Christ's s t ead, His instrument and humble s ervant. It may be come neces s arv for me to

c onvenes in its next Annual session. Yo ur personal consideration
in this matte r will be gre atly appreciated.
