The Personnel Committee of the Detroit
Conference Council on Ministries is pleased to announce their selection and the
Bishop's appointment of William Verhelst
to the position of Associate Council Director for Parish Development/Global
Ministries.
Verhelst comes to his new post after an
eight-year pastorate at Flint Central
church. Prior to that appointment he
served a suburban congregation, a small
town church, and two different multiplepoint charges. He is a graduate of Garrett
Theological Seminary and Northern
Michigan University. He is married to
Suzanne and they have three children.
During the past years Verhelst has
shown great commitment to the global
outreach of United Methodism. In recent
years he has been the director of the Division of Global Ministries within the conference and in that role has helped the
conference move into new areas of
ministry, most recently helping to establish
an area-wide Vietnamese ministry.
Not only have Verhelst's pastorates
prepared him well tor his work in parish
development among small rural and urban
parishes, -including cooperatives and
multiple charges, but he has pursued consultation training in planning for mission
and ministry.
" Bill is highly regarded by both his
peers and his parishioners," remarked
conference personnel committee chair,
Robert Ward. "He will bring a well balanced approach to the concerns of both townand-country and the city."
Commenting on the new additi9n to the
staff, AI Bamsey, council director, said,
"When Bob Davis moved to the West
Michigan Conference and the money
crunch was at its worst, many people
feared that the conference would pull back
on its commitment to parish development.
With the addition of Bill Verhelst we reconfirm our commitment to parish development. Furthermore, having Bill work with
Global Ministries enhances that area immediately, plus treeing another staff person to develop social concerns and health
and welfare lllinistries. We're delighted
with the COillmittee's choice and the
cabinet's appointment. "
Verhelst will reside in the southwest
area of metropolitan Flint and begins work
October 16.
