Petoskey, !.Uchlgal'!JJanuary 29 , 1881. Reared under the strict dis cipline of n
fine Christian home it was quite natural that he should become a Christian l P.ader,

naturally became a vital part of hi s life .

He at-tended hl.gh Dchool s at Cnled.oniA a nd Her s ey, Michigan . He also attended the
Central Normal gchool ( nm·; a State University) at l!t . Plea!Jant and the EvangeJ.icC~.l
Theol ogical Seminary at Naperville, Illinois . Prior to entering the ministry he
spent a period as a public sohcol t~acher.
His convarsion occurred at Blis ~ fi eld , Michigan in 1A92 during his fRther• s pastorat e at that church. During his high school days he became aware of a cal l t o the
Christian ministry. In november, 1903, ha definitelY! r esponded to the call . He
wa s r ecommended by the Reed City congregation. In April, 1904, he applied fo r
licttnse a s a minist er en probati on, 7ihich \\188 gr anted by the Michie;An. Conference.
He was ordained as a deacon and recei vErl into the itinerancy i n 1906. He received
his e lder' s ord~rs in 1910.

First, 1933-40; Det roit U.ack, 1940-47; Pontiac Baldwin; 1947-50; Flint First ,
1950-53; Reti red 1n 1953·

In 1920 he was elected a presiding elder of the Conference. In this office he very
ably served the Gr~nd Rapids Di strict 1920-26. In 1926 the Conference districts
r1ere re-organhed. nnd frOill 1926-28 he served on the Kalamazoo Distri ct with residence at Grand Rapid s, a total of eight years in t he offi ce. Thvee times Henry I.
Voelker was honored by t he Conference by el ection as a delegate to the General
Conference . The years nore 1922 , 1926 and 1930.
He oorved the Gonferenoe at various times in t he following positions,-Proai dent of

the Board of Examine ro; Treasurer of the Conference Missionary Society; A Conference Trustee; Treasurer of the Conference Extension Societ y . Early in his ministry he held the position of President of the Conference J 1•anch Young Puople"s Allianc ~ , t he Conferenc e youth organization.
He has been and still ia one of tho most eloquent and popular preachers of the
Confer enco. On occasion he h:ls bee n dubbed the 11 Danic.l Webster 11 of the :!ichigan
Conference. A combination of wel l dis ciplined hua~r and sincere l ove f or peo~ le
have made bie messages strongl y appe3li ng to those in his audiences. Evan after
many years of retirement he is Gtil l receiving many calls as a supply minister
and t or special occas ions. As a man he is friend)¥, approachable, kindlyJ ~
agreeable, und.eratandinB, appre ciative, humble and dedicated and withal, o. sincere
Christian gentl.om.!ln .. Honors e.n d recognition ha ve come to him unsought. He was
never one to seek after honor. He i s a raithful man of God.
On November 7, 1906 he was united in marriage wi th Miss !.adore M. \ial ker, an
omiable and t alented young wom&n from the Nashville congregation. Th~ have onjoyed a solid and happy marrlnge for nearly sixty years. They are the parents of
two children,-Faul H. • now a special instructor· in the Detroit public sohoolo.
A daughter Kathryn Ida passed away in October 1952.

EUB C h urch (1920-28), died March 12 in a
Detroit hospita l fo ll owing surgery and a
broken a rm. The Voe lkers h ad sold the ir
Detroit home and moved into the Whittie r
Towers last December. The former Ladore
~ · Walker was born January 30 1888 and
married Mr. Voe lker November 1906, during h is fi rst pastorate at Nashville: The; also
served at Buchanan, Ellis Corners, Saginaw,
Portage Prairie, Kalamazoo, Detro it Mack
Avenu:, Cass City, F lint First and Pontiac

ta ught in Sunday schools, took part in pasto ral calling, and e njoyed workin g with the

of th e Uni vers ity o f Pittsburgh ; four
g randch ildre n ; thre e g rea t-grn ndchildre n ·

M iku las, died in 1952. Fun era l se rvices

in Detro it on March 15 with Rev. Elwood

chap lain a t the Whittier Towers. The pall~
bearers were Rev. Myron Everett, Rev. Otto
Fl achsman, Rev. Otto H ood, Rev. Robe rt
Horton , Re v. Gary Ke l le rmann and Rev.
John Murbach . Burial was a t Wood lawn
C e mete1y, Detroit.

REV. HENRY I. VOELKER, 92, o f Whitt ier
Towers, Detroit , a retire d member of the De troit Co nfe re nce a nd a former Evangelical
min ister, is the pre se nt holder o f th e De troit
Confe re nce Cane. The prese ntatio n was made
on Novembe r 16 by Rev. Wm. Ca rdwell Prout ,
presid ent of the Co nfe rence Commiss ion of
Arc hi ves a nd pas tor of the Linco ln Park
Churc h, Flint. The cane is give n to the o ldest
membe r of the Con fe rence or its antecedents,
living within its bo unds, and for the greatest
numbe r of service years . Churches served by
the Voe lke rs in clud e Nashville , Buch anan,
Elli s Co rn e rs, Sag inaw, Po rta ge Prai rie ,
Kalamazoo, De troit: Mack Avenue, Cas s City,
Flint: Fi rst, and Pontiac: Baldwin. Mr. Voelker
was pastor at the First Evangelical Church in
Flint on two occasions, and his fat he r se rved
this same church be fore him. Mrs. Voelker
died March 12, 1971. The accompanying picture was take n at their 66th wedding ann iversa ry cele bratio n.

REV. HENRY I. V O ELKER, 94 , o ldest
member o f the Detro it Conference and ho lder of the Con ference Cane, died Ap ril 25.
Born on January 29, 1881 , at Petoskey, hereceived his ed ucation at Central Michigan
State College, North Cen tral College and
Evangelical Theological Seminary, and married Ladore M . Walker in 1906, wi th wh om he
shared over 66 years of mutual love and ministry before her death in March o f 1973. Two
children, Paul and Kathryn, were born to
them. Th e son survives as do a brother and
sister, four grandchild ren and three greatgrandchildren. Mr. Voelker was recommended to the ministry by the Reed City
Evangel ical Church, licensed by the Mi chigan
Con ference of the Evangeli cal Church in 1904,
o rdained deacon in 1906, and elder in 1910.
His 71 years of ministry began in Nashvill e,
Michigan , i n 1904 and he served charges at
Buchanan, Marshall , Saginaw, Portage Prai rie,
Kalamazoo, Detroit M ack Avenue, Cass City,
Flint Fi rst (p resently Flin t Hope) and Pontiac
Baldwin Avenue. He was Presiding Elder on
the Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo Districts between 1920 and 1928. He also served as the
treasurer of the Conference Mi ssionary Sociotv . oresident of the Conference J3oa~d of Ex-

Trustee, presi den t of the Conference Branch
Young People's Alliance, a member of the
Conference Board of Church Extension and
was a delegate to the General Conference in
1922, 1926, and 1930. He rpt ired from the activP min i ~ try in 1953 and for the last few yea rs
had resided at the Whitt ier Tow ers Reti rement Home in Detroit. His memorial service
was conducted in the Zion Uni ted Methodist
Church, Detroi t, where he was minister
emeritus, with th e pastor, Rev. Elwood Berko mpas, Rev. Ronald CHtcr and Dr. Em il
Kontz, chaplin at the W hitti er Towers, offi ciatin g.
