Dear Brother Clark:,
I sent my little
contribution to the History of early Methodism in North
Michigan to brother Lees on, fearing that you might not
be well enough to receive it. You know it is 3 years or
mome , since you asked me to write up my experience in
opening up that new Country(50 years ago this very month.
and I was happily surprise~ to learn from Bro. Leeson
that though you were not as young as you used to be you
are busy as a Philidelphia Lawyer.
\'Vhy1 I'm called an old"has been" you know; and you were
hiking or driving around your circuits 14 years or more
before I got started. The first meetings I conducted were
in 1886. I had only an exhorter's license then, up to
Christmas that year, when I was licensed to preach. One
of the stewards of the board that voted to license me
was still living in Bay City when I was up there last
fall.
At Pinconning, where I preached 1892 -- '94, I found just
one member who was in the Church when I was there. And at
Hillman (as given in my sketch) not one. On my Indian River
Circuit-1~~~ -'89 -- I found just one, and he was too
feeble to write anything and so deaf I had to shout to
make him hear me. But he was glad to see me.
I was not able to find any Ohurch mecords at I.R. The
Cheboygan pastor has been coming there to preach once
at the noon hour ob Sundays for the past 6. years; but he
told me he knew nothing about the Church records. Only a
few members there , and none of them that I found could tell
me anything about the records. I learned the name of t he
pastor who preached there before him (He came from Onaway
for one service same as now) I wrote to him weeks ago, but
hav·e not received any reply. I gathered some interesting
facts from the children of old members.
And my diary contains some things that might be of interest
too; but I have delayed a write~up hoping to get the records
so .as to be sure of dates and names.
I carry 3 scars on my body received while pastor there.
Not from the violence of men, but in learning a new trade
(working on the river)_ to get mone¥ to buy flour etc. to
feed a family of four1. Flour was $1 6. a bbl. that winter
and spring. An Infidel doctor (Mouthpiece of an infidel
club - s a id to have 12 members) boasted that they would
starve out the preacher, foreclose the mt g. on the Church
and remodel it for an infidel club house.
As health officer he closed one of my church es for 3 mo.
because of diphtheria in one family that lived by the
church. I.R. is no longer the head of a circuit but the
the church still stands. Remodeled (But not by infidels)
freshly painted. And a faithful few are keeping up a very
fgo~ Sunday- School ;and young folks were surprised to learn
a there had ever been an Infidel Club in the mown.
2.
I love thy Church 0 God~ Her walls before thee stand,
Dear as the apple of thine eye And graven on thy hand.
For her my tears shall fall;For her my prayers as~end;
To her my cares and toils be given; till toils and ca res
shall end.
Beyond my high est joy I prize her heavenly ways,
Her s weet communion solemn vows, Her h ymns of love and
praise.
Blessings upon the name of Timothy Dwi ght for that hymn.
It expresses ~ my innermost heart. My twelve years in
the active ministry stand out as the most worthwhile of
all the years of my life.
How good our Lord has been to us to give us so many years
to work with him to bring in tha t better day when evil shall
be cast out and righ teousness shall be established in t h e
world , and "the earth shall be full of t he knowledge of t h e
Lord, a s the waters cover t h e sea."
"To Him I owe my life and breath , And all the joys I have;
He malces me triumph over dea th , He saves me from the grave.

For every loss there is a gain,
when souls are in a ccord
and listen with t h e spir it's ears

And how the rapturous music swells,
that floats across t he years
from choir voices harmonized
