Minister of
Eastwood United Methodist Church in Flint , Mi chigan , has been
appointed Minister of William S . Ford Memorial United Methodist
Church , 16400 W. Warren, Detroit, Michigan, by Bishop Dwight E .
Loder , presiding Bishop of the Michigan Area of the United
Methodist Church.
Dr. Carpen ter , a native of Carroll County, Illinois, was
graduated from York Community High School in Thomson, Illinois
with the Class of 1 930.
He received an Associate of Arts degree
from Kendall College, Evanston, Illinois in 1949; a B. A degree
from Southwestern College at Winfield, Kansas in 1 950; a B. D.
degree from Garrett Theologica l Seminary, Evanston, Illinois, in
1 956 and a Th. D. degree from the American Theological School,
Chicago, I ll inois in 1959 .

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, PLEASE:
Dr. D. C. Carpenter, for the past four years, minister of WilliamS. Ford
Memorial United Methodist Church, Detroit, Michigan, was granted retirement
by the Detroit Annual Conference as the ministerial session of the Conference
began its 137th Consecutive Annual Meeting of the Conference which is being
held on the campus of Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan, June 7-10.
A native of Carroll County Illinois, and son of the late Don H. Carpenter
and Alyce Carpenter now of Lanark, Illinois, Dr. Carpenter received his early
education in the school at Argo- Fa y , Illinois, was graduated from York
Community High School, Thomson, Illinois, Validictorian of the Class of 1930.
He received an associate in Arts Degree from Evanston Collegiate Institute,
Evanston, Illinois in 1949; A Bachelors of Arts Degree from Southwestern College,
Winfield, Kansas in 1950; A B.D. Degree from Garrett Evangelical Theological
Seminary in Evanston, Illinois 1956 and a Th.D. Degree from American Theological
School in Chicago , Illinois in 1959.
Re commended for a License to Preach by the Quarterl y Conference of the
Method ist Church in Argo- Fa y , Illinois in 1946. Dr . Carpenter was received as

a member on trial in the Central Kansas Conference of the Methodist Church in
1950 and as a Full Member in 1952, and ordained a Deacon at the same time.
He was ordained as Elder of the Church in 1954 , and was tra nsferred to the
Detroit Conference in 1955.
Before being appointed to Ford Memorial, Dr. Carpenter served Methodist
Churches in the Rock River Conference, The Central Kansas Conference; The
Central Illinois Conference, and several communities in Michigan .
Dr. Carpenter has been active in programs of the Boy Scouts of America
for many years, and served for a time as President of the United Fund
Organization of Menominee; as President of the Flint Genealogical Society,
and as Vice-President of the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research; a
member of the American Society of Church History, and Society of Biblical
Literature .
Mrs. Carpenter is the former Miss Fern Emmert of Mt. Carroll, Illinois.
The Carpenters have two children, a son Donald, and a daughter Joyce,
Mrs. David Piar, both of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Before entering the ministry Dr. Carpenter was a dairy farmer and auto
mobile mechanic.
Dr. and Mrs. Carpenter will make their home at 1949 Horton, S.E.,
Grand Rapids, Michigan 49507.

Dr. and Mrs. D. C. Carpenter of Flint Eastwood, in a candlelight ceremony at Augs burg Lutheran Church in D etroit, on
August 30. The bride was given in marriage by her father and the rites were read
by the groom's father. The soloist was
Mrs. Larry McCormick of Milwaukee,
Wis., cousin of the bride, who sang "Ich
Liebe Dich" and "The Lord's Prayer." Alfred a Smith of Moorestown, N.J., served
as maid of honor and the bridesmaids were
Tamara Guerne of Muskegon and Kathi
Miano of Detroit. James Richardson of
Dansville was best man with Andrew

the church, November 21 , celebrating
the 35th wedding anniversary of the
pastor and his wife, Dr. and Mrs . D. c.
Carpenter. Dr. Carpenter and Fern Emmert were married on Thanksgiving Day
November 20, 1941 , at Mt. Carroll, 111:

money.

Alyce.Carpenter, mother of Dr. Carpenter; h1s brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs.
Paul Carpenter of lanark, Ill., and their

Nathien of Polo, Ill. ; and son, Donald
and wife and son, Corey Adams, of
~rand Rapids . Nathien Watts was baptized at th.e morning worship service.

DONALD CLYDE CARPENTER, retired
member of the Detroit Annual Conference,
died October 2 at St. Mary' s Hospital in
Grand Rapids of a massive stroke. Clyde
began his ministry in Fairlane, Illinois, while
a student at Kendall College in Evanston,
Illinois. He continued his education at
Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas,
serving pastorates at Rock and Corbin,
Kansas. He served at Ironwood, Michigan
while attending Garrett Theological Seminary. After graduation from Garrett in the
early 1960s he earned a Doctor of Theology
degree from the American Divinity School in
Chicago. Other parishes served over the
yea rs have been Iron River, Menominee,
Armada, Dansville-Vantown, Flint Eastwood, and Ford Memorial in Detroit, all of
these in the Detroit Conference. He retired in
1978. He is survived by his wife, Fern, a son, '
Donald Clyde, Jr. and a daughter, Joyce
Piar, all of Grand Rapids, and his mother,
Mrs. Alyce Carpenter, age 94, of Lanark,
Ill. A memorial service was held at the
Burton Heights Church in Grand Rapids, on
October 6, led by pastors Ronald M. Fassett
and Clark H. Phillips.

Receives Farewell Gift
Following the morning service, june 9, the
Flint Eastwood congregation honored its pastor, Dr. D. C. Carpenter, and fami ly at a
farewell potluck dinner. On behalf of the
members, friends and the UMW, Mr. Bernard
Reetz, presented the fami ly with a cas h gift to
purchase a new robe for Mr. Carpenter who
had been pastor o f the chu rch for the past six
years and was transferred to the W illiam T.
Ford Ch urch in Detroit. The Flying Tigers, a
girls chorus from the l owe ll Jun io r High
School, entertained with a short concert.
