ERIK ALSGAARD
MCA Correspondent
" Original and Trad itional
Acoustic Music to Nourish the
Heart." That is how the~
Hayden Carruth . describes the
mus1c he plays, and the music on
his first professionally recorded
album, "True Blue." The story of
"True Blue" is the story of how
God works in a person's life.
"This fulfills a dream of mine, "
Rev. Carruth said. Pastor at the
Hardy United Methodist Church,
east of Howell , Carruth has been
involved in music since his 12th
birthday, when relatives gave him
a guitar.
" I played," he says, "at the Ark
in Ann Arbor when it was an outreach ministry of the Presbyterian
Church, and followed that up with
accompanying the UMYF choir at
Ann Arbor: First UMC. " While
attending seminary at Asbury,
Carruth and other students formed the " Jubilee String Band,"
and played at many occasions.
Many people who attended the
Detroit Annual Conference will

remember Carruth as the bearded man pl aying the guitar,
recorder, and banjo during the
morning worship services.
" About three or four years ago,
while living in Manchester,
began to play in churches on a
more regular basis. Business has
built steadily since then, doubling
every year," he said. It was this
affirmation, and a " crude homemade demo tape" that God used
to nudge Carruth into making this
next step of the journey.
" I placed an ad about playing
in churches in a newsletter where
Sylvia, my wife, worked. On that
mailing list was the Rev. Bill
Donahue at the Hale UMC, who
saw the ad, contacted me, and
one thing led to another, until in
April we started production of the
album."
Instead of a poor quality, one
track tape, Donah ue provided
Carruth with an 8 track recorder,
computer and synthesizer. What
followed, Carruth notes, was intense, hard work. " We got
together for two and a half days,
20 hours each day, working until
we got things right," Carruth
remembers. " Bill arranged the
songs, adding just the right
touches on the synthesizer." The
final mix was ready in
·september.
Commenting on "True Blue,"
Carruth said the tape is a "mixed bag" of songs, from love
songs, a song about child abuse,
and many spiritual growth songs.
The album is dedicated to Sylvia.
The final product, along with
Carruth himself, will be showcased at the Cokesbury Bookstore open house in Livonia, on
Nov. 22 and 23. Carruth will be
playing in person both days from
noon ·until~ p.m.
For now, though, Carruth 's
ministry of music is expanding
ever more rapidly. " This is the
direction God is leading me in,"
he says. Churches wanting a program by Rev. Carruth can contact
him at (517) 546-0793.
