Ron D. Carter
AUTOBIOGRAPHY: Born in Pontiac, Michigan
in October of 1927, the youngest of five ch ildren
and sor. of a factory worker and homemaker ...
at a home with four room s and a bath. We were
a fam il·{ th at struggl ed through depression and
a nea r loss during the extended illness of the
head of our family in those early years.
Education included graduation from Pontiac
High School (1945), and after a stint in the army, Asb ury Col lege (1953 ), Eva ngelical
Theological Seminary (1957) as well as a Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Consortium of
Higher Education Rel igious Studies of O hio and
United Theological Semi nary (1977).
I met a "Southern Belle" at co llege. Elizabeth
Ma i Brown and I were married in Nashvi lle, Tenn. on a ve ry hot Sunday afternoon
in August of 195 1. She has graced the parish ministry with me for 35 years. Ron jr.
was born in Lexington, Ky. in 1953 and Grace Elizabeth in 1956 in Three Rivers, Mich.
Their exceptional ta lents and the principles by w hich they live continue to be an inspiration (besi des rounding out a family quartet.)
Our ministry has been a famil y team ministry over the years and has included:
1954-55
1955-58
1958-64
1964-70
1970-79
1979-84
1984-89

Short-term mi ssion work in Cuba
Marcellus-Pleasant Val ley (West Michigan)
First (EUB), Flint
Zion, Detroit (merged with Bethany ' 68-'69)
First, Flat Rock
First, Bay City
Tawas

It has been a privi lege to enjoy a Holy Land tri p and two cultural exchanges to England.
These cross-cultural experiences were enjoyed by both the congregation s and ministers
invo lved.
W e are grateful to th e wonderful people of the parishes and communities in which
we have served - for their fellowship, and delight in the memory of their kindnesses
to ou r children.
Much has been crowded into ministry .. . starting with the new beginning (new birth
commitment), College Quartets and Glee Club, cou nseling in and directing camps,
building projects and renovations, entertaining annual (EUB) conference, merging churches, flying, organizing and directing sports leagues and fellowship groups. The pastoral
ministry has offered many areas of service ... and we have counted it the greatest
privilege to have been able to respond to a Divi ne opportunity-what we believe was
a "Call" to serve. It has been a blessing and honor to be a part of special experiences
w ith famil ies when the presence of our Lord has been the answer and met the need .
What a wonderfu l way of life it has been!
And now retirement - not an end - just a time of getting our "second w ind," and
we count it a divine dispension of Grace when w e can breathe easy and con tin ue
to serve!

TESTIMONIAL: When we retired from the Tawas United Methodist Church, we moved to Oscoda and affiliated with that church 25 miles away. Ron and Betty followed
us at Tawas, and not long thereafter visited us and urged us to return to the Tawas
church. We resisted, but they persisted over the next year. Finally, I agreed to teach
his Sunday class for eight weeks, w hi le he held a class for teachers. That eight weeks
turned out to be four yea rs. We had a wonderful relationship. He encouraged the church
to appoint me as Pastor Emeritus and sought to involve us in the church.
We soon discovered that both Ron and Betty have beautiful singing voices. They added to the quality of the choir, blessed us with occasional duets and on special occasions had their son and daughter come and join them in a quartet.
Ron also made a unique contribution to the chu rch and the commun ity, when he
organized a ch urch athletic league. Teams from several of the churches enjoyed competing in softball and volleyball. Of course, in so doing they came to know each other
better and to form meaningfu l friendships.
All of us were deeply moved w hen Ron introduced and directed a "Living Upper
Room" drama wh ich was repeated for the years of his pastorate at the request of the
congregation.
Betty, his wife and better half, is a very sweet, gracious Christian lady who always
had a good word for and about everyone. She has been a rea l asset to Ron and the
churches that they have served.
Finally, Ron is a fair golfer, a good preacher, a fine Ch ri stian and a wonderful friend.

HOW GREAT THOU ART

GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS

Oh Lord, my God! When I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds
thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, thy power
throughout the universe displayed.

Great is thy faithfulness, 0 God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with thee;
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be

Refrain

Then sings my soul, My Savior God to thee;
How great thou art, how great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee;
How great thou art, how great thou art!

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me home,
what joy shall fill my heart. Then I shall bow in humble adoration, and
there proclaim, my God, how great thou art!

Refrain

Refrain

Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed thy hand hath provided;
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and spring-time and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy, great faithfulness, mercy, and love.

Refrain
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside.

We are not alone, we live in God's world.
We believe in God:
who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the church:
to celebrate God's presence
to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
our judge and hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death,
God is with us.
We are not alone.
Thanks be to God. Amen.
