of fhe United Met hodist Church on June 7, 1972 at Adrian Co ll ege, Adri an, Mic higan.
The Reverend Cermak graduated from Bear La ke High Schoo l , Bear Lake, Michigan
i n 1928 .
He received his Bachel or of Arts Degree at Grand Rap i ds in 1949.
To further
his theological training he attended Garrett Theo logical Seminary in Evanston, Ill inois.
He has served the following churches in the Michigan Confere nce:
East Jordan, Grandville, Empire, Bangor, and Allegan.
Church since coming to the Detroit Conference .
Northport,
He has served the Gladwin
Back 39 years ago he received l1is
license to preac h.
Besides being a pastor, he has been active in Rotary, Maso ni c Lodge, and Cancer
Society.
Reverend and Mrs . Cermak have two chi l dren.
Their son, John E., has followed in
his father's footsteps and is a minister in the v/est r·1ichigan Conference of The ::nited
(
Methodist Church.
Their daughter, Mary Miller is a teacher in the Adrian Public Schools .
He incl·icated 1·1hen he retired he 1·1as going to take time to rest up for the summer.
They will be making their home in Northport,

Retirement Reception Is ~
Held for Pastor and Wife
Rev. John W. Cermak, who retired at
the Annual Conference after serving over
40 years in the ministry, and Mrs. Cermak
were honored at a reception May 21 at
Gladwin where they have lived for the
past six years. Charles Harrold, chairman
of the Board, presen ted them with a gift
from the congregation.
Mr. Cermak served as a chaplain from
1943-47 and his pastorates included East
Jordan, Grandville, Bangor, Allegan, Gladwin and Northport where the couple plan
to make their home.

THE - REV. JOHN W.
CERMAK, 88, died on Feb.
18. He was born in Pleasanton
Twp., Manistee County. He
received an AB degree from
Grand Rapids College. He
entered the ministry of the
UMC in 1932 by serving
appointments in Northport,
Leland, and the Northport
Indian Mission. He also served
East
Jordon,
Ellswonh,
Brainard
Norwood,
and
Grandville. He received two
military decorations: the
Bronze Star and the Golden
Medal of Verdun. He was
appointed to the Empire UMC
in 1945, Bangor, in 194 7, Allegan in 1957 ~nd Gladwin in
1966. He retired from the
Detroit Conference in June of
1972. He is survived by his
wife of 64 years, Frances; son,
the Rev. Dr. John E. Cermak
(Adele ; and daughter, Mary
Oack) Betzoldt; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Since 1988 he and
Frances have been residents of
v ·sta Grande Villa in Jackson

requests that in_lieu of flow_ers
memorials be gtVen to Hab1tat
for Humanity of Jackson
through First UMC there.
Memorial services were held
on Feb. 21 at Vista Grande
Villa. Committal services will
be held in early June in Northport.
