MARY ELLEN CHAPPELL
Mary Ellen Chappell, 35, died unexpectedly on Apr il 6, 1984 due to
complications with pneumonia at Bay Medical Center, Bay City, Michigan. She
was born Mary Ellen Jones in Muskegon, MI, March 11, 1949 , the eldest child
of John Paul and Joyce Jones. She leaves behind her father and mother, three
sisters and two brothers, her loving husband, and a young daughter of 3 years
of age, Melody Joyce .
Mary Ellen's family moved to Detroit in 1957 where Mary Ellen attended
public schools and graduated from high school. At the age of 14 Mary Ellen,
under the guidance of Rev. Ray Lumley, attended the Westminister Presbyterian
Camp where she made a decision for Christ. After that an integral part of
her life was the church and especially important to her were youth, churched
and unchurched alike. As an example of this, at age 15 she began donating
volunteer time during the summers to work with emotionally disturbed children
in the Detroit School System .
Mary Ellen attended Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, ~11, and
g raduated with a Bachelor of Science of Special Education in 1971. She met
Lynn Chappell at Eastern in 1969 and they were married on June 19, 1971.
They then went to Duke Divinity School, Durham, North Carolina , where Lynn
undertook his seminary studies in preparation for the ministry . While there,
Mary Ellen taught special education for 3 years until Lynn's graduation .
They assumed their first charge at the Sterling- Al ger - Bentley circuit
where, in addition to assuming the many responsibi lities as pastor's wife,
Mary Ellen took courses at Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, MI,
specializing in learning disabilities towards a Masters in Special Education
which she obtained in 1976 .
Mary Ellen was with Lynn at Ster l ing - Alger-Bentley from 1974 to 1981
and was active in all aspects of the church program and while there worked
especial ly hard with the youth who all came to love and revere her. She and
Lynn spent 3 years in the Conference Camping program, again with youth . Mary
Ellen also wcrked with the De troit Conference Emma us Walk and served on the
Board of Directors as Prayer Chairperson.
In 1981 Mary Ellen went with her husband to the Wisner United Methodi st
Church where she died in 1984. Mary Ellen had taught for 7~ years at the
Linwood Elementary School, Pinconning School District, where they closed the
school the day of her funera l out of respect for what and who she was.
Her funeral was at the Wisner United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim
Thompson, District Superintendant, Saginaw- Bay District, Re v . Dale Brown,
pastor , Howell UMC, and Rev . Bill Bollinger, pastor, Fairgrove - Gilford Charge
officiating . Although a host of people came to love and respect her, numbers
meant little to Mary Ellen, for, as she well might have said, "You start by
loving just the one in front of you".
