which he needed, as he exp ressed it, "he fell from g race." When he
was a young man, he came to Michigan, and settled near Tecu mseh~
The re, under the preaching of Rev. J oseph Bangs, at the age of
twenty-t,vo years, "he renewed his covenant with God, and joinecL
the Methodist Episcopal Church."
In the Official rvlinutes of the :M ichigan Confe rence for I 87 6, it
is said of him: "Always of a religious turn of mind, he though t out
those fun damental doctrin es of Christianity for himself, and, searching
the \ \T o rd of God for authority, stored his mind with the truths he·
found the rein-tru ths which, in afte r years, proved their value in his.
matchless controve rsial discourses upon Calvinism, the Doctrine of
Decrees, R eprobatio n, and the Final Perseverance of the Saints..
H e was, emphatically, a doctrinal preacher, who would, in a sermon.
of an ho ur o r more, probe to the bottom the fallacies of Calvinism~>
Unitarianism, and Universalism.
•· Immed ia tely after joining the Methodist Episcopal Church, he
en tered upon the work of the ministry, was licensed as an exhorter,.
and took his first work, as a subordinate, in the old Ohio Conference·
of 1 S35. and was sent to Mou nt Clemens. In r 836, his name appc.:ars in the Mansfield Conference fvlinutes, [tha t is, in the Minu tes
of the 1\Tichigan Confere nce held at Mansfield Ohio], and he was.
sent to Plymouth, and there he was married to a Miss Lorimer.
She left his s ide, in six or eig ht m o nths, to join the hosts of the
rc.:clec med . ln the year rSJS, he was sent to Lyon s charge, th en
embracing the territory now covered by the thri,·ing town of Portland. Here he assisted at the fune ral of Phil o Bogue in 1839. a nd,.
two years a fter, was married to Mrs. Eliza Uogue, by Rev. A llen
Staples, of blessed memory. Servin g two years upon the Lyons .
Circuit, he was then appointed Presiding Elder of the Shiawassee·
District. F o ur years of District work, traveling fro m Grant! Rapids.
to Sagin aw, pron:d hi s efficiency, and, at the expiration of his term
here, he \\·as se nt. as Presiding Elde1·, to the Adri::m District.
•· H <'n: he li ved, at Adrian, fo1· three years; poorly paid, but:
laying upo n the hearts of the people such g rand truths that, far and
near, there remains indelibly fixed in the m :nds of those who heard
him, p rofound impression s of the preaching o f L<~;rmon Chatfield."
Although his early school advantages were very limited, he was,
very accurate in 'the use of lang u;Lge, and, thoug h he was ig nora flt
of the technical rules of logic, he understood how to reason logically,.
and was a man of great power in the pulpit. He died a t Portland,.
Ion ia Cou nty, where he had resided fo r many years, in August, 1876•.
