Detroit Retirees ' Experiences
ADRIAN (MCA)-Each year the time
shared with the retiring clergy families is
one of the highlights of the Detroit Annual
Conference.
This year 13 clergy retired and shared
their experiences on Friday afternoon,
June 15. We have highlighted some of
sharing from Gary and Mildred Kellermann on page 1 and from Bishop and Lois
Thompson on page 7 in a different feature
story. Some of the higlights include:
Ralph and Jean Churchill-He told
about how he had polio at 14 and was temporarily paralysed. It ~as at thi.s po~n~ that
he was willing to be mvolved 1n m1mstry,
and has never regretted it. He did marry
another Detroit Conference pastor's sister
(Jean's brother is :rex ~ic~a.rd). Jean
recalled a time early 1n the1r m1n1stry when
someone asked: "What do you feel about
the new minister?""l'm married to him"
was her reply.
Floyd and Nancy Ellison were not present retiring on the twenty year rule.
G~rald and Norma Fisher-Their
retirement is going to be hard, with all the
travel between Traverse Cityin the summer and Fort Myers, Florida in the winter!
She retired from teaching _last year, and
was asked: "What will you do with all your
tree time?" Her answer, It's a myth that
ou have free time! "Unknowns can be
if it is true that you, have a P?sitive
known in your life, God. Jerry sa1d th~t
ever since he accepted Jesus as h1s
savior at 17, I've had a reason to get up
in the morning."
Jack and Winifred Fulcher-She said,
"I'd like to thank God and this conference
tor keeping us employed for 40 years!
Also, we are grateful for the Methodist
Children's Village where we adopted ?ur
0 children and the Chelsea U.M. Retlre:ent Home where Jack's mother died
with dignity." Jack related how he use.d
to worry about being short, an~ one of h1s
friends said, 'Jack, they're ~aymg us. from
He ment1oned th1s to
he neck up.'
tWinifred
. she sa1d
" · , 'N'ow you
·
r-"
and
"now
whY 1 had to work!" When he was you.n g
d discouraged, someone sa1d,
?,~espise not thy youth," and he knows
hat is true today.
t Gary and Mildred Kell~rman-~i~dred
as enjoyed being the w1fe o! a mm1ster,
~hanks God for the four sons g1ven to them
and is grateful for the church and all the
rtunities we've had. Gary remembers
~:a~ they went to conferenc~ and did not
know where they were movmg. He was
b.K.
Gary and Mildred Kellerman share their
experience at retirement.
appointed to Chatham Village and asked
where that was. 'You are starting itt' was
his D.S.'s reply.
George and Minnie Kllbourn-He
retired from General Motors after 26 years
and then came to Lola Valley for the past
ten years. He has really enjoyed the work
there, especially with children. She had
heart surgery seven weeks ago, but would
not miss this.
Lou and Beverly Reyner-missed
because of his health, on disability since
1978.
Clyde and Helen Smith-Clyde mentioned that he always made it a point to
attend this service. "It always inspired me
and sent me out to be a better minister."
Dale and Carol Stewart-He ha~ been
an Air Force chaplain for the past 28
years. Carol could not be present because
she has been on kidney dialysis for the
past eight years in San Antonio. He then
gave a powerful and moving testimony to
her faith and spirit and what it has meant
to his ministry. "Like Clyde Smith, I'm going to keep my three minutes to 15!"
Bishop and Lois Thompson-He said,
"If you want a good wife, pray to the Lord
for one! I did. No black preacher can
preach in three minutes, we haven't even
given the introductions by then." She
said, "We don't know what the future
holds, but we know who holds the future."
They introduced their family and the bus
load of Conant Avenue members who had
come down to see them off.
Bishop and Mrs. Ammons hosted the
group for dinne r following the
presentations.
